Went to the summer place this afternoon to do some cleanup chores. Then we drove to a nearby river valley where I photographed grizzly bears in June. Today, in late afternoon, we saw seven (and possibly 8) different grizzly bears!! Unreal. You might have heard about a tragic incident in Banff NP in which two hikers were killed by a grizzly on the weekend. The couple lived just down the road in Lethbridge. I did not know them. A very rare occurrence considering all of the interactions between humans and bears. Most unfortunate. I need to stress that these low-quality bear photos were shot at 400 metres from high on a hill looking down .. in low light. I took photos of three more (a sow and two large 2-yo cubs) from 600 metres. We saw four more but at least three were previously seen. Two common ravens

How lucky you are to live in that region. From afar or not - the fact that you were able to get those bear shots is exciting and wonderful.

Those bears look huge, and I appreciate how exciting it must be to see them in the wild. Do they make much noise, is that how you spot them?

You don't want to be anywhere near enough to a bear to hear ! They are big, except cubs of course, and usually enough different color from surroundings. cjt

Do they make much noise, is that how you spot them? No, we usually drive in Waterton NP and spot them (or not) from the road. They are out at this time bulking up for winter hibernation. Last night I just sat and waited for them to come out as had been reported. I waited no more than 10 minutes for the first one to come out of the woods into the clearing before disappearing again...walking away from where I was high up on the valley bank. You don't want to be anywhere near enough to a bear to hear ! Good point. If you can hear a bear that would be too close.

Beautiful images, Clive. I like the presentation on your second one with the branches in the background.

I liked the way the haze hung in the background and the reflection from the windows on the water.....the boat going past was a bonus. You have to click it to see it more clearly.

These are asperitas clouds ... here. This morning in our area. Very cool clouds. Contrast, levels and clarity enhanced to show off the cloud structure better.

Out and about today and thought this nicely summed up the design of (wo)man vs nature - one of the intrinsic differences being straight lines. Mona Vale bus depot vs mother nature.
