As dirt-cheap inexpensive as memory cards have become, even for low budget paupers such as myself, my wife and I never erase or reformat a memory card, we just have extra new ones on hand for when one becomes full and keep the full ones as another backup source. It's amazing how things vary across different parts of the world. In my part of the world HDD's are very much cheaper than memory cards on a per GB basis and so it makes no economical sense to use memory cards as a long term storage. I keep just 2 x 32GB memory cards in my camera bag which gives me enough capacity for shooting photos and video for a day. I then copy the cards to one HDD at the end of the day and make a backup on a second HDD.
