I can never resist a cropping challenge and having participated in a few at camera club I know that everyone's opinion is often different - so here's mine: I'd keep it portrait to match the vertical nature of the lighthouse. I did adjust the perspective a bit - as it's shot from below. The funny thing about perspective is that when you view a scene like this live you never notice the buildings leaning as the brain automatically corrects for it but that doesn't work when looking at a photo. Whether to correct or not is a matter of personal taste - I like to correct at least a bit. I left a bit of water in at the bottom and got rid of some of the rocks - here's where I finished up: Tony

I didn't mean for anyone to delete their post but rather to wait to hear from the OP. Caspa, to answer your question.......by adding the red box you altered the appearance of the original image so yes that could be seen as editing the image. Also in order to do that you had to either take a screenshot or download the image. ok, thank you for clarifying. I'll keep it mind next time :-)

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I am okay with revisions to this photo. (Sorry!...I should have stated that when I posted!) Clive, I didn't even notice the person! Thanks for pointing that out and yes, you are right that the lighthouse is slightly distorted due to the angle I took it at. I will have the opportunity to take the picture again, and will try some of the other suggestions. Thank you for letting us "play" with your image. Here I straightened it a bit to make the vertical lines vertical, especially on the left edge of the white and red buildings. The original perspective was messing around with my eyes a bit too much. The straightening means a bit of the sky is lost but only very little. You could let you imagination run wild with this scene and turn it into a very nice art photo as well.

Pat Took a run at this. - Cloned out the person
- Cloned out the sign on the white out bldg
- I am a "sky" person so favored the sky to the foreground
- Cloned out the offending concrete curb
- Straightened the overall imaged so the tower is vertical
- Added your own personal stamp in the lower right!

Thank you, I didn't attempt any perspective change.

srmoment, thank you so much for allowing us to work with your image. This is the kind of post that generates a lot of interest and encourages members to share their editing skills. I have enjoyed seeing everyone's suggestions. And "seeing" is the operative word here. Sometimes words alone just can't address an issue like this. It is also interesting to see how we have come full circle with Jim's post above.

I’m late for this challenge.. Here’s what I did. Since there was a question about distortion, I opened the image in DxO Viewpoint. The software offered its correction on the distortion and it then gave me a “Rule of Thirds” layer for cropping and subject placement. I adjusted the rule of thirds to place the top of the lighthouse at an intersection. The original photo ratio was maintained. For me, the interesting foreground with the eye catching red house and top of the lighthouse draw the viewer in. The interesting sky is an added bonus. After seeing the posted image, I think Viewpoint didn't do a great job. Thanks for allowing me to play.

I believe that right wall of the red building following the contour of the lighthouse plays tricks on one's perception of what is and what should be.
Also, I wonder if the white building might not actually be narrower at the floor than at the eaves.

Buckskin, I think you are right about that! After re-reading all of these comments, I have redone the image to try and capture what I felt about the moment - i.e. the sky was huge and full of cool clouds, the lighthouse was pure in its colors and I loved the partial reflection in the rocks. ...I ended up re-cropping using one of Elements cropping choices for my normal image size (17.28X12.96), cloning out the cement block, the signs on the white house, the man at the lighthouse, and trying to straighten the perspective of the white house and lighthouse (...very, very difficult - I hate distortion of buildings....). Thank you all for your input into this image. p.s. this was so helpful, I was wondering if we should have a thread or area for constructive (helpful) criticism of images for our members??? ...without causing additional work for our wonderful administrators👍
