I have to admit - even after doing digital scrapbooking for over 15 years, I'm better when using a template Maybe the end result doesn't even look like the template, but it's such a help to get me started In this case, I did use this template pretty much as designed, but ... Because all items on a template are on their own layers, you can: Turn 'em, Flip 'em, Move things, Resize things, Delete things -- You are not required to use the template as is Let your creativity take over Template - kakleid_JACelebration

Nice use of the template Janice and the colours are lovely. The hairdo is lovely too with the little pink streaks there.

I love the colors and layout of your page, Janice.....and it's a very sweet picture of your granddaughter. It sure is a testament to your scrapping/design/and color sense to see a picture of the kit that you started with. To me that is a huge creative leap!

I love templates where they do the work for me. That above template could easily be used just as designed - color choices and all. It's a pretty template which actually doesn't need 'fixing'. It didn't work for my color palette, but it did work for the subject matter (a single photo layout with no journaling), so I adapted it. Other templates are basic - what I call 'placeholder' templates. They are like schematics - telling you where to place items, but not giving you nice items to use on your final project. Those templates are great to get a visual of where 'stuff' would look nice. And they are a great starting point for your layout. However, they are specifically made for replacement. You replace or color each item on the template to make it your own. This is what I consider to be a 'placeholder template' - you wouldn't drop a photo onto it and consider it a finished project.Sorry, I do not have info on who created this template - it's probably more than 15 years old and I didn't keep records back then.

How sweet, lovely colours, not just the ones in her hair. Getting started is what I find the most challenging, but I try to find inspiration by looking at other's pages and if I see something I think I can re-create then I give that layout a go, sometimes it's a big hodge podge of ideas....sometimes not.

Templates don’t really work for me I’m afraid. Sometimes I get ideas from looking at what others have done and sometimes it’s just trial and error and a lot of luck.

What you are both talking about is called “scraplifting”. It is a great way to get ideas. For me, though, I’m usually not very successful being a scraplifter - especially when there are masks involved. Recreating masks is very difficult for me. I never seem to have the brushes needed to get the look I want. Mask creation is an art - template making is an art. In all the years I’ve been doing this, I never evolved into a designer. I would be lost without templates and scrapbook kits made by others.
