Aptly named with that shiny black shell. It says they have an exoskeleton, meaning their skeleton is exposed. They also say those big things can fly if they have to. I sure wouldn't want that pincher-mouthed thing buzzing around my head.

I was sitting at my desk when this dude came walking across the back of my hand; Sounds like the thing that nightmares are made of.

I keep wishing I will see another one of what we used to call a "pincher bug" ; I hope they haven't fooled around and went extinct. They were huge and had these huge curved/pointed pinchers on their mouth.

Wonderful close-ups, really shows the pinstripes on his back. I would’ve taken a photo after I’d flattened it😉

Wonderful close-ups, really shows the pinstripes on his back. I would’ve taken a photo after I’d flattened it😉 Thanks ! You guys should see my desk top; a good size snake could hide there for days. It does take a certain amount of discipline to hold off on stomping until after photos. To get such magnification, I am often using both, extension tubes between lens and camera, plus a magnifying diopter (close-up filter). I have four close-up filters; +1, +2, +4, and +10; I have not tried it yet, but I think I can even stack these. We have two sets of extension tubes; one set is completely manual bare-bones with no electrical contacts; the other set cost about fifty cents more and has contacts so that aperture will work without having to jump through hoops; these extension tubes can be double-stacked as well. I also have two +2 tele-extenders; I have not yet tried them in close-up photography like this; I have seen YouTube video where guys are using them and the idea is to gain a bit of distance away from the subject; without them, my ring flash is the same as against the counter-top in shots such as these. Depth of field and focus plane is about as thick as a dollar bill on these types of shots; the merest fluctuation will change focus dramatically. I have the aperture at f:36 and notice how quickly the point of focus drops off on the longer/angled shots; the head and eyes may be in focus and the back-end be quite blurry. I never can think of it; but, I need to place a penny or something similar next to my subjects as a size reference; that whole bug was maybe 3/4-inch long.

Great pictures, BuckSkin. And they do look like leather, don't they. You mentioned 'Nightcrawler'. Are they another type of beetle?

The Nightcrawlers I mentioned are huge big earthworms that are popular fishing bait around here. The beetles begin as a huge white "grub" that is big and juicy and fish must love them. (one of the many reasons why I don't eat fish)
