I have scanned some family photos onto my hard drive as jpegs using my Epson printer. When I try to import them into PSE18, I don't get the image but a symbol. Is there something different about importing a scanned jpeg as opposed to a regular jpeg??

Hi dano, Our in-house Organizer guru -- michelb -- is not online at the moment. I'm no expert in this area but I'm going to get the ball running. I also have PSE 2018. I have no problem importing scanned jpeg files into the Organizer. Would you please give us some more information? A screenshot of the "symbol" you mention would be very helpful. Thanks!

What are the pixel dimensions of your scanned jpeg?
If they are larger than what the Organizer allows then the Organizer displays a symbol instead of the thumbnail of the image but the image is still imported into the Organizer.

Of course, you are able to view the scanner jpegs in other programs, right ? One stab-in-the-dark possible is that the files saved from the scanner, or the folder you put them in, may be restricted in some way and lack the necessary permissions.

That right there would be the deal breaker for me; it would be like working in the blind.

That right there would be the deal breaker for me; it would be like working in the blind. Many of my stitched panoramas (psd files) are larger than the Organizer allows so the Organizer displays a symbol instead of a thumbnail. It's certainly not a deal breaker for me. I simply create a smaller jpeg about 2000px wide and save it in a version set with the original stitched panorama. The Organizer automatically places the jpeg at the top of the version set stack and displays its thumbnail. The jpeg acts, in effect, as the thumbnail for the stitched panorama. In any case, I still tag the images in the version set with appropriate location and whatever keywords so I can still easily find images whether they have an actual thumbnail or just a symbol displayed for them in the Organizer.

Is there something different about importing a scanned jpeg as opposed to a regular jpeg?? dano, I sent a PM to michelb bringing your inquiry to his attention. He will be online later on. Here is something he mentioned. The size of your jpeg files is probably over the maximum size limit for the Organizer. Here is the Adobe document about maximum size limits in Elements (including the Organizer). Maximum image size limits in Photoshop ElementsIf your file goes over the maximum size limit, you will get this kind of thumbnail when you import it into the Organizer. Is this what you are getting?

Thank you Sepiana.
That is repeating and confirming what I posted earlier.
The OP might be able to use the workaround I posted if he really needs the large sized jpegs.

Not knowing any better, I scanned them at the highest resolution available 1200 dpi. The image does show up in the Editor, which notes the pixels as 10,000 wide and 13,000 high.

Better plenty big as too small to print. For comparison, straight out of my 7DMkII = 5496 x 3670 Without looking it up, I think the 7DMkII is something like 20.2 megapixels, give or take.

Given that 1 megapixel = 1024 x 1024 pixels = 1,048,576 pixels then your image is ~124MP which is way over the 72MP the Organizer allows for pc's with more than 2GB RAM installed. But as you noted, the images can still be opened and edited the PSE Editor. If you really need to keep more than 72MP then the workaround that I use, and posted earlier, gets around the Organizer's image size limit very nicely and easily.

Thank you everyone for the explanation. dano, you are most welcome! Credit shared with michelb . He brought up the issue of maximum image size limits in our PM exchange. And I thank you for starting this thread. The Adobe document on maximum image size limits has been added to our sticky Elements Organizer -- Resources thread.

Thank you everyone for the explanation. No problem, you're welcome. Keep the workaround in mind if you need to catalogue large images in the future.
