I am going through some of my old photos to see if I can "resurrect" some. The 'original' below doesn't really do very much for me so I thought I would try to make it more dramatic and interesting. Any feedback welcome Original After

Sometimes I think it is hard to be objective about our own work. I actually prefer your original image. I find the sunset color added to your after doesn't look natural to me. BUT having said that it's what you find most pleasing in the end. I do like this kind of post so thanks for creating it.

Thank you for your feedback hmca :-)
I also thought that as a sunset scene, it doesn't quite look right and so I totally agree with you.
But then I thought to myself that as a sunrise scene, with the sun behind me, it could be plausible especially if the sun was still very low resulting in yellowish light being filtered through the atmosphere.
Does this sound plausible?

The predecessor of this site, Elements Village, actually had a section "Before and After" and I always enjoyed seeing what people started with and what they accomplished with it.

Yes, I like seeing before and after photos as well. Maybe it's a board the admins might consider adding here as well Here is another one. With this one I tried to create a different 'mood' for the photo. Any feedback also welcome Original After

My experience on the east coast of the USA is probably very different than yours. I have taken many ocean images at sunset, with the sun setting behind me.....this produces a soft afterglow on the ocean. You might want to Google sunset images for your location. Perhaps someone else will weigh in on this.
Looking at your new image posted above, I again prefer the original. I like the way the flower stands out against the darker background.

As a sunset image, yes, it doesn't work. As a sunrise scene it is more plausible imo. I suppose what I am asking everyone is, if I posted only the 'after' beach photo and titled it "Sunrise" is the image believable?

In that case, it might be helpful to indicate that the sun was rising behind you to get a more accurate critique. Hopefully someone will be more helpful than I can be at this point.

Thank you again for your thoughts and feedback. Just for the sake of clarity for anyone else, the 'original' beach scene is close to sooc with the sun very high in the sky. The 'after' is after my additional edits using colour grading attempting to create more drama and interest in the scene while still maintaining reality to a large extent.

With all the color combos I've seen in our sunsets, your 'after' looks good to me. I am always amazed at how many colors one can see in the sky at dusk. Some of these photos were taken before all the houses were built across the lake - so there isn't as much shadowing of the houses on the lake in those photos.
I thought I'd really hate when the housing went up across the lake, but it turns out it isn't as distracting as I thought it would be - and it has afforded me some great shadowing effects. Views from my back door...

Feel free to share any thoughts or feedback about the 2 pairs of images I posted. I have a very thick skin and I don't bite

Thanks Caspa -
We call that type of collage making “digital scrapbooking” but I like to divide the hobby into two types of scrapbooking - ones like that where the focus is on the photos telling a story and another kind I call “artsy” where the focus is on creating a piece of art and the photos are not the focus but a piece of the art’s design.
It’s an interesting way to use your photos - give it a try.
That is a man-made “lake”. Actually it’s a rain water retention pond We get some pretty heavy downpours and without these type of areas, flooding would occur. Some communities have indentations-a pit like thing and the water just drains away --- and some line them with plastic so the water does not drain and a lake forms. All the water is from rain, so you can only imagine how much flooding would occur without them. The communities get huge lot premiums from those of us who want to live on a “lake”

To capture a decent sunset image, I have to go somewhere where there is a horizon.
In Kentucky, there aren't many places that have a horizon; any decent expanse of land or water is surrounded by taller hills and even taller trees; and, any dramatic colors or cloud features that might be are hidden behind all of that; the sky seldom gets pretty, it just gets dark.

Buckskin - I have never lived on water before, so I was awestruck (and still am) by the beauty outside my windows. I never knew the range of colors created by the sun.
