It's Christmas day, and my gift to you is the following tutorial! Before diving into it though, I want to welcome a new member to the CEC team! stinson has generously volunteered to offer new Creative Effects Challenges, beginning in two weeks.
Now, let's open this gaily wrapped package!
In Creative Effects Challenge No. 104 I presented a technique for creating a Detailed Sketch Effect. This one is similar, but it is particularly well-suited to portraits since it tends to leave out unwanted details like blemishes and wrinkles while focusing on the main features we do want to see, such as the person's eyes, lips and hair. I studied several tutorials written for Photoshop-proper to make one tailored for Elements. - Duplicate the Background layer (Ctrl+J)
- Desaturate the layer (Ctrl+Shift+U)
- Duplicate the desaturated layer (Ctrl+J)
- Invert the new layer (Ctrl+I)
- Change its blend mode to Color Dodge (image now appears as white)
- Apply the Gaussian Blur filter (Filter | Blur | Gaussian Blur...)
- Stamp all layers together (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E)
- Duplicate the top layer and change its blend mode to Multiply to darken the effect
- Reduce the Opacity to your liking
If you would like to add a hint of color back into your sketch, continue with these steps: - Duplicate the background layer (Ctrl-J)
- Drag the new background copy to the top of the layer stack
- Change the blend mode to Color or Color Burn
- Lower the layer opacity according to your taste
Here is my result; I am looking forward to seeing yours!

Showing the original from StockSolo and the two sketches. Including the original to maybe help someone else avoid an image that has parts of it that are in deep shadow. The dark part of her hair does not look good with the effect. Sorry they're so big...used screenshots.

Santa came visiting today (from Pixabay). Added colour a little differently - having got the black and white sketch onto a new layer I put the coloured original under the sketch and set the blend mode to linear burn and adjusted the opacity of the coloured layer. Tony

Yes, that is a very difficult image to work with all right! You did a great job with it though Helen; well done!
FYI: in one of the tutorials I looked at they applied the Poster Edges filter from the Artistic Filter Gallery to the hair to get it to look more like a sketch.

I really like your result Tony. The bokah-like background really helps to make the whole image pop.

- Added color back by dragging the background layer to the top (Color Burn blending mode, 25% Opacity). - Applied a Paper texture by PDaily (Charcoal, Multiply blending mode, 75% Opacity). - Created the edge effect with Filter Forge (RB Torn Edges). - Applied the Add Noise filter. - Image from Pixabay.
