hmca - thanks and I added a bit more saturation to make it pop a bit more. This is all very fun.

I am having trouble following this tut. In step 2, I don't see the Find Dark & Light Colors, and Snap Neutral Midtones options in Photoshop Elements. Is this a Photoshop-specific option?

You have to hold down the Alt/Option key when you click on Auto. It works really well when you get this going. The tutorial said hold down the Option key so I changed it to Alt/Option and made it bold.

So is that the action or this CEC steps? I ran your action and then tried following the CEC steps.

Ok I may have confused people and have added this to the first post - "The outcome of the image after running the action should not be used any further with the steps below." I was attempting to improve the detail that wasn't shown when I ran the action on the cat. The action works very well for some images but not the one I was using. Thanks for clarifying.

Got it; thanks! I always enjoy learning something new.
Step 5 says to select the area not to be blurred, but that seems backwards. I selected the subject (the part NOT to be blurred), then clicked the mask button while holding the Alt-key. The result was a layer mask with the subject in black (step 6). Going on to step 8, I applied a blur and the subject is indeed unaffected.

5 says - Blurring the area which isn’t the focus: Use a selection tool to select any area you wish to blur. You did this by by holding the Alt key which masked your subject leaving the rest if the image to be blurred. A different approach but works just the same. In your case easier to select the subject and mask it. In my case it was a small selection at the bottom so I just selected it and added the mask with no modifying key.

Ok, this was a challenge for me, but fun too! Here is what I finally arrived at. I couldn't get the sketch part of it to look good so I let the original subject show through quite a bit and added a vignette. It is an interesting image I think. Thanks for hosting the CEC stinson ! I look forward to your next offering.

With this one I created a normal sketch from the original image, applied a frosted glass filter and blended with the original image (sorry can’t remember which blend mode I used). Created a reflection to which I applied an ocean ripple filter and I applied a stained glass effect to the background. Image from Pixabay, Stars from HiClipart.

Another try - this time I found the infra-red BW conversion worked quite well so basically followed the sketch tutorial but did insert a levels adjustment layer above the black and white sketch to add more contrast to the sketchiness. Tried stained glass but went with a simple sandstone texture instead. Image from files (from the last time I visited the Beringer Winery in the Napa Valley). Tony
