... that in 1957, you could get a record player in your Dodge? Yes, a record player. I bet you had to stay on smooth roads
(BTW - I just love that car)

WOW, I am still amazed that you can play CD's in the car without damaging them. I would never have thought you could play a record. Don't think I would like to try it with one I loved and valued.

Turns out, the first version of the record player played records made specifically for that player. The next year, they made a record player that played 45's with a multi record changer - Needless to say, it was an overall bad idea - luckily 8-track players for cars were on the horizon.
If you are interested in the 'back story' click the link in the initial post. It's well written and very interesting.
We had an 8-track player - after market - under the dashboard - - the only time we've had something stolen from our car. They took the speakers we had installed in the rear deck, too. I laughed at that - the screws we had used to install them were long - there were four in each speaker so I can only imagine how long it took them to steal the things - and only one speaker worked anyway. I got my $50 back from the insurance company for the 8-track player and never again put an after-market item in my car. The good news, they did not do any damage to the car - and we learned a lesson - never left the car windows open again.
Had a 6 CD changer in one car - installed in the trunk - hooked up to the car radio. Thought we had died and gone to heaven with that thing. Then we got a 6 CD changer in the dashboard - that was the best iteration of the concept.
My present car has Cassette Tape and CD players - but then again, my car is 18 years old.
Now you cannot get any sort of music player in your car. You are expected to hook up your phone and play your music that way.
Gee, I’m old

How absurd! I’m not surprised that the trend didn’t last for very long. I usually only listen to the radio when driving, and at the rate that fuel prices are rocketing lately, I think I’ll be doing a lot more walking with my EarPods as I listen to my current ebook.

They took the speakers we had installed in the rear deck, too. Yes, I'm quoting myself Forgot to share the rest of this story... Never covered the holes in the rear deck and after visiting a friend who was stationed at Ft Polk LA - we started on our 1,000 mile journey to get home Miles away - driving down the freeway - we hear a cry. Our friend's cat had gotten into our car, crawled in the trunk through those speaker holes. I think he wanted us to adopt him. oops!! sure glad he wasn't a heavy sleeper
When we got home, we got speaker covers to cover the holes -
