Apples for Henry My cute little sidekick has been feeding apples to Henry since she was a year old. That is the exact same shish-ka-bob skewer that she started with; the skewer was my idea and it keeps little fingers safely from between sharp teeth and strong jaws.

I have no doubt that she loves spending time with you....and you with her. Your pictures say a lot for the special bond you share. What great memories you are creating with her.

What beautiful pictures, BuckSkin. I would like to add, that it is obvious your young sidekick, and Henry share a special bond, too.

On first impressions Henry doesn’t look untrustworthy, and the stick is a great idea, but There is something special about feeling the softness of a horse’s muzzle as he delicately Hoover’s up the treat on offer, perhaps your little sidekick is up for the challenge by now.

On first impressions Henry doesn’t look untrustworthy
My poor horse-bitten wife would beg to differ; it has been over twenty years ago and she still bears the scar - and she was just standing there minding her own business. In Henry's defense, I don't think she was his intended target as another bossy bully horse poked her nose toward his trough while he was eating and was quicker to get out of the way than the wife was. I think he has regretted it for years; but, my grudge-carrying wife will never forget it.
As for riding him, he isn't what I would call untrustworthy; explosive is a better word; he is quick, lightning quick, and demands your full attention 100% of the time, else he will leave you hanging in the air and be thirty feet away before you know what has happened --- think Woodrow F. Call's white/grey horse.
He has not yet parted company with me, but he has rolled completely over a few times with me still aboard; of course, that was in our younger days.
But, I believe she could get away with riding him; he will tolerate her doing things that he would never allow anyone else to get by with.
I have been thinking about saddling him up and letting her climb aboard; me with a firm hold on the rope, of course. I use a choker lead on him for such occasions; as long as he acts right, it is no different than any other lead; but, if he rears up, runs backward, or starts to outrun me, he can't get far when his air gets cut off.
Who knows, he may act like a perfect gentleman and her be riding him all over the place before long.

I thought Henry looked as though he is getting on in years. Obviously still plenty of life left in the lad yet.

Here you go, Henry; you dropped one.
Friday_22-April-2022Notice the big kink in the gate in these next two; Ol' Henry bent it into a horseshoe the very first day I put it on the hangers; brand-new gate and it looked like a heard of buffalo had ran through it. He has always had something against new gates; there are three gates on the place that he left his mark on the first day they were hung. It was a lot worse that it looks now; I laid it on the ground and drove the truck back and forth across it several times. That was in about '02.

Henry looks a bit insulted that he's only being offered a portion of an apple and not the whole thing, nice of your little side-kick to share.

Ol' Henry's supper. Oats, cracked corn, shelled corn, wet molasses, soybean oil, and "grain products"
Friday_22-April-2022
Oh, what I would give for a supply of good ol' 1970s Wayne Feeds "Front Runner Horse Krunch", recommended every morning on WJRS by Captain Stubby. 14% Protein and all whole grain and so thick with wet molasses. Run your hand down in it and a pound-and-a-half would stick to your arm. In cold weather, the bag would stiffen up like Quikrete. It smelled so wonderfully good that it would make you jealous of the horses; I admit to eating many a handful. $2.10/50-lbs bag.
Today's $27/50-lbs Purina Omelene 200, as good as it gets, doesn't even come close; accordingly, I bet the Wayne would cost $50 today.
Here ya' go, Henry
Good Ol' Henry

How long have you had Henry?
Good question; I will have to go find a tombstone to be sure.
I bought him from a good friend when he was three-yr-old and that friend died about two weeks later.
I know it was after 1994 and before 1998.
On another note --- those orange things hanging from his halter are insecticide-impregnated fly tags.

On another note --- those orange things hanging from his halter are insecticide-impregnated fly tags. I thought they might have been what you have referred to in past posts. Following up on Jacki's question.....what is the average age expectancy for a horse?
