Don't you scatter ashes in Canada? That is common too. My dad's ashes are already in the Atlantic Ocean and our oldest son plans to one day scatter some in the Pacific as well.

I came upon this bench on a footpath somewhere way out in the countryside and wondered whose memory it memorialised....... i.ibb.co/g3sRVnJ/Bench.jpgCouldn't help smiling when I read the dedication. A quirky and mischievous take on a solemn subject. i.ibb.co/9b9qKNW/B-CU.jpgBrenda

Anyone who has read Killer Angels or seen the movie Gettysburg knows of the 20th Maine. I didn't realize until visiting how simple the monument is and how set back it is from the main area of Little Round Top.

A very recent trip to Gettysburg. No shortage of monuments there. Battery B 1st New Jersey Light Artillery (Clark's Battery) Anyone who has read Killer Angels or seen the movie Gettysburg knows of the 20th Maine. I didn't realize until visiting how simple the monument is and how set back it is from the main area of Little Round Top. Andy, perfect for this week’s theme -- monuments with a history. Beautiful setting for the 20th Maine monument. It looks so peaceful!

One of the more unusual monuments in the local cemetery - dates back to the 1880's and is made of mostly zinc (originally described as white bronze). It's hollow and was sold at the time as a cheaper alternative to granite or marble and in fact holds up remarkably well over time. The company that made them has long gone so the cemetery has a bit of a problem in trying to replace a panel on the far side that got damaged. The dark spots are rain - it just started as I took the photo. Tony, very unusual indeed. I like its shape (obelisk?). The falling rain was a bonus; it enhanced the texture of this monument.

There is an historic old church next to a beautiful peony garden in a near-by town. This particular tombstone caught my eye when I noticed the man had been born in Scotland in the late 1600's. Helen, nice finding! It's interesting to see how his life is "summarized" on the tombstone.

Bill, this is amazing. What an interesting mausoleum! I love the fisheye effect; it's eye-catching. As we approach Memorial Day in the US, I'll add a couple shots from Fort Vancouver Barracks Cemetery taken this morning. Seeing the rows of stones is staggering and forces one to pause to remember and humbly say thank you. And maybe work just that much harder to see if we can somehow stop it all. These images do make one pause, remember, and say thank-you. As they say, . . . "A picture is worth a thousand words".

Came across these 3 crosses standing in an otherwise empty field. I'm not sure what they memorialize, but they clearly mean something to someone. I liked the western meadowlark perched on the middle one. (both shots with Canon 60D and EF 100-400 L IS II) Rick, great finding!. These 3 crosses were undoubtedly erected in memory of . I like the avian detail as well. Beautiful image, with a painterly quality!
