A while ago I posted a challenge using Gradient Maps. I've always found them interesting as a way to modify the colours of an image based on the light levels (luminosity) in an image. More recently I've played around with blend modes other than the usual "Normal" and then modified the colours in the gradient that I used to see the effect on the image. The result can be subtle changes in colour or dramatic changes depending on the gradient and the blend mode. So this challenge is to play around with gradient map adjustment layers, gradients and blend modes and see what you can come up with. No videos to watch or tutorials to follow but here are a couple of examples I did showing the original and the results with the layers and gradients I used under the images. This one started with an Unsplash image from Thom Holmes and used two gradient map adjustment layers, one set to darken and one to soft light to add some colour to the sky and some more green to the greenery. I used layer masks (and select subject) to keep the gradient maps from adjusting the hiker and played around with the colours in the gradients to get the effect I was looking for. The second example is much less subtle with an image I took last week - using colour burn as the blend mode and, again, a custom gradient that I tweaked the colours to get an interesting look. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Tony

I happened to take these paddle boards yesterday. I used a spectrum gradient and like the way it "jazzed" them up. I masked the effect off the rack.

Image from freephoto.se Gradient by Vintage Voyage Design Co via Deal Jumbo.com - it is a blue to lilac gradient. Applied a levels adjustment to provide a bit more contrast.

Well done everyone. Lots of variety from subtle to jazzed up. Was interesting to see what can be done with a black and white image as gradient maps are also a good way to convert colour to black and white. Keep them coming..

Just to confuse birders . Started with a House Finch, selected the subject, used a gradient map with the Gold metal gradient set to Multiply, a few more tweaks and finished up with a House Gold Finch ?? Tony

Not being a birder you could certainly fool me.....Clive not so much!
When we have these gradient challenges I always like the subtle difference they can make in landscape/seascapes.....BUT...do I remember to use them? Maybe this time. Thanks for the challenge....and the reminder.

I really love the way the gradient map changed this warm photo to a cool one...all the tonality in the resulting image is wonderful! Actually, the model now matches the background. The final would look great as a book cover, Sepiana!
