Northbound KY Hwy 485 Kettle - Cumberland County - Kentucky Wednesday_10-June-2020Kettle Post Office
Zip Code 42752
Date Established: 22-July-1881 Date Discontinued: 03-July-1993 In Business: lacking 19-days being 112-years
This is where my late friends, brothers Ernest and Leon Davis, used to get their mail when they were kids.
Of course, when they lived in Bow, they got their mail at their uncle's country store and post office.
KY Hwy 485 junction with Sulphur Creek Road
I stood in front of the Kettle Post Office to take this picture.
Turn right on 485 and it will dead-end at Sulphur Creek Resort on Dale Hollow Lake.
Turn left and Sulphur Creek Road is a 3/4-mile long connection with KY Hwy 449. These fresh deer tracks were in the mud at the edge of the road, straight across from Kettle Post Office.
There used to be a Kettle Elementary School in the vicinity, Grades 1-8, with 276 pupils and 11 teachers in the 1968-69 roster. I found an alumni site with the most recent member dated 2000; however, you had to register and join the site to be included and there were only 35 registered alumni; so, that 2000 is not an accurate cut-off for the school; it just tells me that it still existed in 2000.
Ernest and Leon were born and raised in Cumberland County. In the 1960s-70s, they would say that, when you crossed the county line, roll your clocks back 30-years; then, with each passing decade, they would add another ten years to the recommended roll back; I have to say that their estimate is pretty accurate --- and there's nothing wrong with that.

"and there's nothing wrong with that." Amen to that. 👍🏻🙂 I've lived in small towns for over 50 years. We have all the latest "technology" but life is simpler in rural areas. There are small, ex-coal mining towns to the west, where you could drop out of sight and be happy as a clam in high tide.
Yet, today, I am sitting in a modern, billion-dollar hospital in Calgary waiting for my DIL to finish her neurologist appointment. Can't wait to see the city in the rearview mirror. 🙂👍🏻
