Well....., sorry....., but I'm fixin' to change that.....Tuesday_09-Aug-2022Corn Ear Worm (Helicoverpa zea)
One of the wife's co-workers gave her some fresh corn from their garden.
They must practice organic gardening; I shucked back a dozen ears of corn and there was one of these in every ear.
You never see this in the silage corn we chop every year; those boys lay the good dope to it and you don't have this nonsense.
That dude is a good inch-and-a-half long.
The slimy brown-gravy soup that saturates everything in there, including the silks, is Caterpillar excrement from where the Caterpillar has devoured all of his siblings.
They will not tolerate more than a single Caterpillar and one will eat the others.
You can cut this mess off and try and make yourself believe the rest is fine; you can have my part.
This is why you buy corn-on-the-cob at the grocery and the silk ends have been neatly cut off = they do that to cut away evidence of these nasty worms.
You can learn all about them at Wikipedia and it is well worth a read.
Bear in mind...., the worm end of the ear is pointing up when on the stalk; ... remember, we learned about gravity back in grammar school.

Organic or not, those would not pass as "vegan" fare! Never seen one in our sweet corn...thankfully. Good macro photos.

Thanks for the compliment.
I hadn't thought of the vegan angle; you are right about that; on purpose or accidentally, letting that dude slide down your gullet would be against the vegan rules.

Corn Ear Worm (Helicoverpa zea) Good photography but yucky worms. Reminds me of the old saying "What's worse than biting into an apple and seeing a worm there?" Answ.: Biting into an apple and seeing a half a worm inside!

It is untelling how many are in a can of cream-style corn..... HA HA HA! Knew there was a reason to not eat caned, cream corn. Sweet corn is a big deal around here. A few years ago the sweet corn growers were harping at the silage and grain corn producers for not controlling European corn borer.
