New to me as well. I suppose an arsonist would view his work as pyrography ... on a large scale.

I tried using the steps as written by Tom, but, since I use PhotoshopCC, that didn't work out so well. SO...I went to the video and followed along. Here's my result. Wood background from Erik Kuna, image is from the font Webdings, and the actual font is Broadway.
Thank you for this tutorial, Tom...I love playing with text!

Thanks for giving it a go VickiD ; your result is quite believable! I am curious why the written instructions didn't work out so well for you. Did any of the steps not translate to PS-CC, or were you simply unhappy with your final image? When I tried the extra steps in the video I didn't see any improvement, but that could have been because of the wood and font I used.

Go to Enhance | Adjust Lighting | Levels... (Ctrl+L), move the left Output Levels up to 70 Tom, the step above totally baffled me. There is no "Enhance" in PhotoshopCC...and I tried going to Filter > Render > Lighting Effects, but it didn't translate to anything there. In some respects, the two programs are quite different, but in most there's a workaround. I just couldn't find it...especially since I couldn't figure out the purpose for that step. I realize NOW that the Ctrl+L was all I needed for that step!
Also, written steps just didn't work for me...when I watched the video, even with the written steps in front of me, I had to rewatch some parts a number of times to grasp what he was doing and to be sure my layers were correct. I guess what all this means is that I need a LOT of practice with this effect!

Vicki, in Photoshop, . . . go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels.

Thank you for explaining that Vicki. Not only are the two programs different, but even versions of PSE sometimes change! It can be maddening when something you have a muscle memory for suddenly doesn't work. I'm really pleased to hear the keyboard shortcut did the trick in this case.

Tree and wood from my picture collection and then in PSE I used custom shape tool (bird), Style Bevel, then Texturizer (bird) to complete.
