...so I just tried this as it would be really handy to change my selection brush from hard to soft, but it did not work for me. When I used shift plus the right curly bracket I just got the brush to go in a straight line. I tried using it with my mouse activated, shift and }, but did not get the desired change. What am I doing wrong? [I'm a right hander, but use my mouse left handed......]

You need to first adjust the brush hardness by pressing the Shift key while tapping the left or the right bracket -- [ ]. In effect, what you are doing is typing the curly brackets -- { }. Then, you begin painting.
This works the same way as if you went to Brush Settings and adjusted the Hardness slider. It is just a shortcut for this adjustment. As a matter of fact, whichever hardness adjustment you make with this shortcut will be reflected in the Brush settings.

Hi Pat, can this be of use for you? I can't use the bracket key, (because I don't have them on my Norwegian keyboard) so I use this instead. It's VERY easy. No gymnastics involved. youtu.be/vG5QOzODCBs

Well thanks a bunch, I'll be using this tip often. Just this week I have been doing some post-processing where I have changed the brush often using the shortcut method. Since I had started following this thread, I thought I would check back to see if there was anything new under the sun. Glad I did. Never too old to learn.
