Saturday_29-October-2022 Three Whitetail Deer in our Backyard
As I was walking back to the house from feeding Henry, I spotted these three deer who already had me in their sights.
I started whistling a tune; and, instead of running, they really perked up and paid attention, remaining motionless while I kept coming up the driveway, went up on and across the porch, and then inside, leaving the door open.
I kept whistling; the deer never moved.
I grabbed the appropriate camera and discovered the batteries were dead; that camera stays connected to the GPS satellites even when it is laying on the shelf and it had been a couple weeks since I had changed the batteries.
I kept whistling.
I quickly swapped in a fresh battery cartridge --- times like this are when my idea to obtain several spare battery grip cartridges really pays off.
I kept whistling.
Back in the open doorway and the deer are still right there where I left them.
I took these photos standing in the open doorway.
There are three sizes of deer here; the one in the center is quite the larger; the one on photo right is the smallest; and, the one at left is in between. I suspect they may be mother, last years daughter, and this years daughter.
In a bit, they shifted their attention from me to something out of my view to the South-West; my right - their left.
At first I thought it might be more deer; but then, whatever it was, they decided to abandon the scene.
Here is what Kidadl and Wikipedia have to say about them.

Aaahhhh, the deer whistler strikes again! Must have been some performance...
It seems to work with most critters; those silly little foxes from back in the spring had already disappeared into the thicket and, as soon as I started whistling a tune, they didn't just sneak back out into the open, they bounced back out into the open, ears up and intently listening.
Although most any old tune, even an unrecognizable one, will work, they seem to prefer Gary Owen.
>>> I just had a thought, more of an epiphany..., I need to get my cute little sidekick a Flute, or a Piccolo, or maybe a Fife, and let her mesmerize the wildlife while I operate the camera.
In most cases, when an animal is moving briskly along and you need it to stop, a keen piercing whistle will bring them to a stop and they will look right at you --- maybe just for a second --- but stop and look they will; try it some time.
It also works with animals of the human persuasion.

I need to get my cute little sidekick a Flute, or a Piccolo, or maybe a Fife, and let her mesmerize the wildlife while I operate the camera. Was reminded of this post when I saw this video in our local paper......she actually looks a bit like your little buddy, I think.

I saw this video in our local paper.....
How on earth did you watch a video in a newspaper ?
For whatever reasons, I couldn't manage to see your video via the link provided; however, I went straight to it in YouTube; it about has to be the same video; 11-yr-old girl that closely resembles my 9-yr-old sidekick, a Flute, and two white cows and a black steer.
I bet that poor old black steer is there to walk The Green Mile as soon as the weather cools.
I just havvvvve to get that girl a Flute.
Thanks for enlightening me about the video.

Aaahhhh, the deer whistler strikes again!
I just a minute ago had another deer experience that fits right in with our deer whistler discussion.
Some weeks ago, I had the accessories/auxiliary battery on my truck disconnected for some reason or other; and, just like the electricity going out in the house, it messed up all of my clocks, radios, and such.
I have this one Pioneer stereo with Blue Tooth phone connection; and, after the power disconnect, all it would do was display "SETUP"
So, I searched for and found my 714-page instruction manual; and, high-powered reading glasses on my head and big magnifying glass in hand, I was taking advantage of this nice day to spend a few hours putting my stereo back to rights.
After getting all the necessary (and very complicated) settings taken care of, I was scanning through and saving the presets for radio stations.
I found a station I had never heard of before and they started playing Pink Floyd --- Another Brick in the Wall ----- I have really REALLLY good Pioneer speakers, four of them, two in the doors and two big ones in the sleeper ----- needless to say I cranked 'er up; the truck was throbbing.
I decided I would run inside and get a pen and notepad so as to make note of the station call numbers and whichever of the 30 presets each one was associated with, so that next time, I would be ready and it would just be a matter of finding the frequency and locking it in.
Did I say the truck was throbbing ?
I bailed out of the cab and started toward the house and ran right into three deer standing right at the corner of the truck; I nearly fell over them ---- deer must like good Classic Rock too.
Surprisingly, they didn't take off in a panic; they just sort of ambled away, but still looking back, like one does in the grocery store aisle when some super-hot hottie is making a selection from the bottom shelf in the canned goods aisle.
UPDATE: I spent a few minutes inside the house; and, when I opened the door to go back outside, those deer had moved back in close to the truck.
One thing to note when scanning and locking in radio stations = don't make the mistake of doing it on election night --- like I just did.

Sounds like the 'deer whistler' has found another source of sound that's attractive to them. I'm still pondering on their expressions as they looked back in your direction, I've always found that the fresh baked goods section to be where the hotties hang out.....
