Male Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

I started out the door, saw a Blue Jay, and ducked back inside to get my camera.

Camera in hand, the Blue Jay was long gone; however, I saw this Woodpecker way back in the timber.

There were so many twigs and branches in the way that I never got a clear shot; however, with something so seldom seen as this, any shot is better than no shot.

Here is what Kidadl, Birds and Blooms, ABC Birds, Audubon, All About Birds, All About Birds ID, e-Birds, and Wikipedia have to say about them.

On a poverty-level Kentucky budget, a 24-exposure roll of film would have two Christmases and a summer vacation on it and we might have to wait another six months before being able to afford developing the film.
I still have trouble remembering that it doesn't cost anything to take thousands of pictures; it just almost seems impossible to be true.

Yes, woodpeckers and other birds y sure hang out in thick bush...so hard to get clear shots at them.
Are Red-bellied Woodpeckers the size or a robin or bigger? ... it looks larger.
We don't have those here.
