Thanks for the link. I am anxiously awaiting the rollout of Win10. For anyone sitting on the fence debating whether or not to upgrade, here is an article which lists 10 compelling reasons for doing so: link

Umm, yes, I'm looking forward to Win 10 to be launched but my intention is not to upgrade until it's been in use about 6 months, and preferably SP1 is available. Reason being, as when a new OS is launched, it's inevitable that some issues and hiccoughs will be experienced. I'd rather wait until most of the teething issues have been resolved. I realise a lot of people have been testing Win 10 for some considerable time and report good things. However, once the 'world' get on to it, I think it's highly likely to have some bugs that need ironing out quickly. That's just my tuppence worth, of course

I'm with Julie. I prefer to wait a few months after its release to be sure the inevitable glitches and bugs have been mostly corrected. Having said that, I put it on "reserve" when they notified me that I could do that, about a month ago or so. So, will I still have the option of just leaving it on "reserve" after July 29th (release date) or will it be automatically d/l and installed on my Win. 8.1 machine? Or will I be able to hold off on actually clicking "install"?

I don't believe it will happen automatically. According to the FAQs . . .

I won't be upgrading until I know for sure pse14 and earlier versions will work on Win10. Has anyone checked if pse is Win10 ready? I can't find the answer anywhere on Google.
But even if pse is Win10 ready I'll need to check that my printer drivers and Internet Security software are Win10 ready. After all of the above are ok, I'll also wait at least about 9 months or until the first service pack comes out. I don't want to be a guinea-pig for Win10 or have any nasty surprises with things not working after the upgrade.

Rita,
I believe the "forced automatic updates" feature will apply only to the Home Edition of Windows 10. It does not extend to Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions.

"Windows 10 Enterprise does allow users to postpone any update indefinitely but it is only available in bulk licensing."
Sepiana, the above is the only exception that article mentions.

You are absolutely right. Thanks for the correction! BTW, this ARTICLE also confirms it.

Sepiana,
thanks for the link. Interesting. I think the operative word here is "defer". That would be only temporary, and "refusal" would not be possible.
I think what we will be facing in our computing future is something like "Resistance if Futile"

One of my main concerns is about the automatic updates. On my PC I don't envisage a problem. It's regarding using my laptop that I anticipate issues. The reason I have a laptop is so that I can be 'out and about' with it, as many others. If, when out with my laptop, I'm not connected to the internet, no updates will be possible. However, my concern lies with situations when I go to 'known' places, ie friends, clubs etc and I connect with interenet. To me, the obvious thing to do would be to switch on my laptop, automatically connect to internet BEFORE I go to my friends or club etc, in the hope any update waiting will update before I leave. If this doesn't happen, or I forget, or even in a rush, as soon as I turn on my laptop, connect to internet either automatically or manually, downloads may start downloading with nothing to do to stop them. If at Computer Club, where many of the members don't frequently switch on at home, I can foresee 50 members all starting downloads at the beginning of a session, taking up all the bandwidth, causing any other uses to be unable to work on their laptops. If at friends, a download could just use up a monthly allowance. Have others got similar concerns? I can't believe it will only be me to have such issues

"When you're not using your computer, Windows 10 will automatically download those updates, install them, and restart your computer. You can also schedule that restart for a convenient time."
Julie, the above is a quote from the article Sepiana found. So a download should not start while you are in the middle of using your laptop.
