I posted one of these photos in "Today's picture" and also a composite in my gallery. I belong to a FB group Backroads Alberta, Creating Memories Through our Lens with 32,000 members. Members post photos mainly from rural Alberta. These cattle drive photos were posted there and people like them. But check put the comment!! (First image.) This young lady saw the photos of her husband (black oilskin coat) and BIL (yellow slicker) on horses. She as in the pickup at the back. Her FIL was in the truck with the stock trailer in front. I had a nice chat with him. So she and I messaged each other and I put some photos into Dropbox for her. Makes me happy.       |

I was about to say that this was not something one would ever get to see around my area; but, I got to thinking of all the times I have seen people around here that are too sorry to fence proper and their cows all over the highway and them out there on their 4-wheelers trying to round them up and get them out of the traffic.
It's always the same people whose cows are always out in the road and in peoples yards and crops and gardens and they never put up a decent fence.
Good looking Chestnut horse.
It is rare to see a horse of any color that doesn't have a white marking somewhere; I don't see a white foot, nor star nor snip.
As for that Grey Roan, he could be three or he could be thirty; it is hard to age a horse that color; they all look old.

I don't see a white foot, nor star nor snip. Thanks for your comments and observations. I know about white foot and star. What is a snip? One of my late uncles was a horseman and had a nice "grey roan(?)" named Snipper. I always thought its name was from his nasty trait of biting strangers. Me, for instance.  |

A "Snip" is an isolated sort-of comma-shaped bit of white on the tip of the nose; as opposed to a strip, stripe, or blaze, or out and out bald face. A single horse can have a Star, Strip, and Snip; any one or two of the above, or none of the above. There is a CHART HERE showing most of the markings along with wikipedia's idea as to what they are called, but that differs from region to region. |
