This week I finally made the leap and signed up for a Creative Cloud Photography subscription which includes Lightroom and Photoshop. After spending 20 minutes looking around PS, it's clearly going to be a big learning curve if I am to use it instead of PSE, which I'm not sure I will yet. The main catalyst in signing up now was that for a while I've been comparing website hosting plans to upload some of my photos to my own website - inspired by the work of billz to a large extent. Perhaps that's a bit egotistical of me but it's more about giving me an end result to keep my motivation up rather than showing off to the world (having said that I've put the link in my signature  ). Anyhow, in my comparisons I discovered that the CC Photography subscription is not much more than a basic (but decent) webhosting plan and includes website hosting plus LR/PS and a decent website builder - Portfolio. So that plus $20 p.a. for a custom domain name delivers all I need. So now, I have to spend even more time at my comp learning the (new) ropes. Then again I may find I don't need much of the extra functionality LR/PS offer and stick predominantly with PSE. Who knows? But at least it helped me get my website up and running. It's a work in progress and already I've noticed some of the uploads have lost some sharpness, probably due to resizing, so will need to be redone. Do any PSE users also have PS and/or LR and find there are specific features that are particularly useful over and above what PSE provides? |

Good luck Howard . You are a brave soul but you are also motivated. I only use PSE and feel it meets my simple editing needs. I suspect we are from different generations and I am less inclined to change my work flow and post processing. it's more about giving me an end result to keep my motivation up Excellent point. If the added power gives you more satisfaction that is all you need. Sharing and promoting is all good but the real market you are trying at satisfy is you. I am happy when I get what I think is a good photo, but my ego demands that I share. Win win. Keep us posted. |

Thanks for the encouraging words, pontiac1940. The big boys are daunting and right now I suspect I'll keep using PE and Nik for most of my workflow, given that I don't do graphic design, scrapbooking etc. When you say "the real market you are trying at satisfy is you", they are very true words. I read an article by a photographer recently that said basically the same thing, and it has taken a self-imposed pressure of me trying to be all things to all people and not knowing if what I end up with is "right" or "wrong". If I like it, that's really all the matters (still can never make my mind up whether a shot should be b&w or colour though!  ). Keep on clicking! |

Good luck with the transition. I liken what you will be going through similar to when I transitioned from Windows to my Mac. I believe I was just too old when I switched -- boy it was hard - but now, I'm happy.
Stick to it - have patience.
About 10 years ago (due to a deal my son could get), I got my first copy of 'real' Photoshop and after spending a year working with it, I didn't find it all that difficult as much as I found all the decisions I could make very daunting. I just don't need that much "precision" in my photo "fixing" -- Realize I'm fixing photos for scrapbooking purposes. I don't have much of a camera and I am not much of a photographer, so Photoshop was much more than I needed.
When it was time to upgrade, I went back to PSE.
The newer versions of PSE are all most of us "amateur" photographers need and each version of PSE is better than the last. Although I love trying new software just for the sake of 'playing', I'm sticking to PSE now.

I have never regretted my investment in PSCC....at $10.65 a month I saw it as comparable to a magazine subscription. I will leave it to others, and your own exploration, to help you decide if there are features that enhance your photographic style and interest. it's more about giving me an end result to keep my motivation Having a project to work on is a great motivator. Took a look at your website.....nice start and I especially like the picture you chose for your home page. |

(still can never make my mind up whether a shot should be b&w or colour though! ). Thinking about this.....next time you are stuck consider adding the image to the Member to Member Advice Bd. Could be a great learning experience for all of us. |

I agree with Jacki, Howard. A great start. One thing I like a lot already is that it shows us where the photos were taken just by holding our cursor over the picture.

I used elements for a few years but now solely use ps/lr. A lot of the items on this forum are very relevant to photoshop. You will be fine

Thanks for all the comments/ideas/encouragement...feelin' the love!  hmca "consider adding the image to the Member to Member Advice Bd" good idea! Your analogy to magazine subscription is apt. I do the same with the cost of a case of beer (about AU$60 for anything decent here!) Jim "shows us where the photos were taken just by holding our cursor over the picture." It's a clever little thing and automatic so no coding required. I was going to add a visible title to each page cover to indicate they are linked to a sub-page for each place but the roll over is far more elegant. blackmutt Your confidence in me may be ill-founded  But seriously, I'm sure Ill get the hang of things as soon as I've mastered where everything is. Its the UI that is much different to PSE that surprised me initially. I've already updated the France pages to solve the sharpness issue and it worked a treat using "Process multiple images" to resize the longest edge to 1200, to keep a 3X2 image. Onward and upward! I'm too lazy to set up something ...I just use Flickr and mostly it's for me and not the public, although the images are public.

Do any PSE users also have PS and/or LR and find there are specific features that are particularly useful over and above what PSE provides? I have Lightroom but really don't use it in preference to PSE, as some of the useful 'tools' that are in PSE, are not in Lightroom. My opinion on Lightroom is that its an ideal application for professional photographers who need to quickly process, and catalogue large batches of images, such as wedding, and cruise ship photographers etc. In my astro imaging days, I used the full Photoshop (CS2), as there were some specialised 'tools' that are not in PSE. In my opinion, the full photoshop in very much overkill for the hobby/amateur photographer, who will only ever use a fraction of the 'tools' that photoshop provides. The usefulness of the early versions of PSE was somewhat limited (basic), but as new versions were released, more of the useful 'tools' from Photoshop were included. If you are to use Photoshop, be prepared for a steep leaning curve. |
