As you may have noticed, Adobe has "retired" Refine Edge in Photoshop CC. The new kid in town is . . . Select and Mask. This change has caused quite a stir. Some love this new feature; some hate it. However, did you know you can have both? Here is the trick.
1. Make your selection. 2. Hold down the Shift key. 3. Go to Select>Select and Mask. 4. Refine Edge pops up, ready to be used.

Steven, thanks for the information! I hope they fix these bugs soon. Despite their presence, Select and Mask is several notches above Refine Edge. It is much faster and much more precise. I am in awe at what it can do with flyaway hair, fur, fuzzy edges, etc. I love it!!!

I hope they fix it and bring it over to the next version of Elements. We have already asked Adobe for it. However, I am not sure our wishes will come true. Back in Elements 11, Adobe brought over the same Refine Edge used by Photoshop. Will they do the same with Select & Mask in Elements 16? We will see!

I even upgraded my video card to one based on Pascal architecture as per adobe techs recommendation. Unfortunately it didn't help much. I still use refine edge!!

Steven, I am curious. Where are you having problems with Select and Mask? I have noticed this when I use this feature.
If I make my selection with the Quick Selection tool, there are no problems. It is a different story when I use, for example, the Magic Wand or the Lasso tool. Select and Mask doesn't seem to like it and begins acting up. So, my workaround is to stick with the Quick Selection tool. It is my favorite tool to make selections anyway; I use it about 99% of the time.
Once I am inside the Select and Mask dialog and I try to use the Tools panel on the left, some performance problems develop. Fortunately, nothing too critical. I just have to come up with another workaround.

I usually use the quick selection tool and than jump into select & muddy, "as I call it. Than I use the refine edge brush and it usually ends up deselecting stuff I'm not even near or ignores where I'm brushing. Also the memory used in the select & mask is enormous. I really hope they get it working smoothly.
I usually just exit it and use the old refine edge which works most of the time for me. I recently picked up a client from TV that does a lot of posting on Facebook/twitter for her fans, Her hair is why I still use refine edge or in some cases, channels, calculations.

Thanks! Your experience with the Refine Edge Brush tool matches mine. This tool seems to have a mind of its own; it doesn't obey my "commands" all the time.
As a side note -- Despite my complaining about Select and Mask, I have chosen to use it. I don't intend to go back to Refine Edge.
