My take away from the post was to be especially careful (don't use) public wifi.

Yes that is totally correct Peter. Public WiFi is high risk for things like banking. But I have no issue with doing banking using my bank's mobile app while connected to my home Internet via WiFi or while connected to my mobile phone's data connection.

No bank will give an unconditional 100% guarantee that their banking apps are totally secure in all situations.
To some extent every user has to decide for themselves how much risk they can tolerate which then determines to a large extent how they do use their phone apps.

A hard wired router that provides WIFI connectivity is far superior to cellular data - which is only secure from your cell phone to the nearest cell tower after that it's no longer secure

It also depends on how securely the app sends the data and the technology used to transport it to its destination.
For me, the risk in doing banking on my mobile network with my banking app is minimal.

OTOH cellular traffic is only secure to the closest cell tower and then it's tranmitted in the clear to intervening cell towers.

... OTOH cellular traffic is only secure to the closest cell tower and then it's tranmitted in the clear to intervening cell towers. I'm not convinced that is true for the mobile network I use. It might or might not be. I would have to investigate to find out for certain. But in any case, the 4 major banks here in Australia all provide a 100% guarantee to their customers to reimburse any fraudulent debits from their bank accounts in all online banking cases. Their banking apps are designed to transmit data across the network as securely as possible. I would imagine some banks' apps might be better at securing their data than others or maybe they use the same method/technology. I'm not sure. So far I haven't had any issues doing banking from my banking app using my mobile network and knowing I will have any fraudulent debits reimbursed, allows me to tolerate the minimal overall risk to me.

I found a few links - albeit none specific to Australia
