I'm 100% sure I had activated the Type tool (NOT the Type Mask tool). Yet, when I click on the image to start entering the text, I get a reddish film covering it. Why is this happening?
Answer:
Even if you didn't activate the Type Mask tool on purpose, this red mask will appear when you are trying to add text to an image which is in the Indexed Color mode. Go to Image > Mode > . . . and select the RGB Color mode. Then, type away.
