I've come to the conclusion that it is something to do with the photos being stored on an external drive. When I go through the same process for photos on the C Drive they are replaced immediately.

I am working through my photos in the Organizer (nearly 44,000), making occasional alterations and re-saving using the same file name etc so that it is replaced. In the past the new version overwrote the original version and inherited the original tags. Now when I save the altered file the tags are no longer attached. When I search for Untagged files I can find the new version but I have to re-tag it and also individually delete the original version. I think something is wrong but I don't know what. It is making tidying up rather time-consuming and extremely frustrating.
Is there a way I can get the organizer to work as it used to?

Wow! Thank you all so much. Lots of lovely ideas. I knew there'd be a way just couldn't get my brain around it. Now off to have a play - I can see that I'm going to be thinking up all sorts of things to do with my new found skills.

I'm working on a retirement card and want to put a photo as the background behind a selection of other photos. I want to fade the background photo so that it isn't too dominant but can't work out how this is do ne. Could someone point me in the right direction please. (I'm using InDesign to create the card but, of course, using PSE to prepare the individual photographs.)

Thanks Chris - I'll have a look. If editing is as easy as claimed I can see I'll be videoing more frequently. I'm so cack-handed that I always end up with a shot of my finger or the ground at the end of a session.

Thanks for the recommendations Peter & Sepiana. Will have a 'play' - I'd hoped that there was a free option somewhere, just didn't know where to look.

I rarely shoot a video but have one taken of a dog who we know won't be around much longer because of his age. There are parts of the video I'd like to keep and share with his owner but need to cut out the beginning and the end which are superfluous. Is there a way I can do this in the PE Editor - I'd have no on going need to buy Premiere Elements?

I've done exactly as you recommended and yes, it works a treat. Thanks so much Sepiana and 99jon on Adobe.

Thanks Sepiana and Rita. It's good to know it's not just me it's happening to. I'll download that plugin (a new venture for me) and give it a go. I'll be back if I get myself into a tangle.

I run a gardening forum on Tapatalk and we hold a monthly photo competition. People upload their photos on a given subject (the subject is important - not the quality of the photography) and towards the end of the month these are voted on via a poll. Due to Taspatalk's restrictions this means I have to save the photos to my own hard-drive so that they can be reposted for voting purposes.
I know that the photos are posted as jpegs (as some are my own pictures) but when I come to copy them some have turned into webp while others remain as jpegs. If there is a need to work on the picture I've found that Elements can't open the 'webp' versions. I can work round it but I was wondering what this webp format is and does anyone know whether Elements will eventually be able to work with it.

That was already disabled - but I'll watch out for it the next time I upgrade. Thanks for the advice Michelb

PSE 2020 which I installed shortly after it was published last year. This is the first time I've come up with a problem. I'll have a look at Preferences to see if I can find it.
Edit to say thanks and that I found it and removed two ticks. Is there anything else which should be unticked?

From the Organiser I opened a file in the Editor, made the necessary changes and saved it over the original - which is my usual practice. It wouldn't let me this so eventually I saved it under a slightly different name and deleted the original from the Organiser.
I then continued to look through the photos and decided to delete one which was fuzzy - but the Organiser wouldn't allow me to do it with this error message 'Analysis is Currently Running on selected media. Please try again after some time.'. What Analysis? I've been using the organiser in its various incarnations since 2005 and never before been prevented from deleting a photo.
Any idea what is going on? Have I clicked something in error? As far as I know I haven't allowed the Organiser to do anything automatically as I prefer to have complete control of my photos.

Wow! now I've got three methods of achieving what I want to do. I'll continue 'playing' and see which one I get the hang of quickest. Thanks everyone for your help, I knew I could rely on you to sort out my messes.

ChrisAnn - see if this action works for you. Sorry Frank - it wouldn't let me open it as it couldn't find the correct program.
Edit to say, If I read your post properly in the first place I would have seen that its an Action not something to be opened. I'll have another try at opening it.
Edit again to say: It works! thanks.
