However, we will (hopefully) have this forum for a long time yet which is absolutely invaluable, as far as I'm concerned. Without this forum, I'd certainly be lost Oh, is that a possibility, to keep the forum active? I could live with that.

I reread the email just now. What does this mean: "... the Photoshop Elements market has been steadily declining..." ? Are PSE users a dying breed? Is PSE obsolete? Geez, and I was just getting comfortable with PSE 10!

I just read the email and am heartbroken. Even though I was not an active participant in the forums, I was an enthusiastic reader and totally in awe of the kind, generous, and knowledgeable people who did participate. I don't do the social media stuff and really counted on the PET website and magazine for info and tips.
Guess I'll be spending a lot of my time downloading tutorials and such!
Thanks to all who made this magic happen.

Thanks, everyone. Sorry I didn't respond sooner; normally I get an email that a thread has been updated, but this time did not.
An external hard drive seems to be a popular solution, and I already own one (500GB Seagate)that I use to back up all the docs and photos on my laptop. Okay, I warned you I'm not techie and I meant it, so here's my next question: if a regular ol' external hard drive is the way to go, how do I get the photos from my camera to the hard drive? The connector/plug for the hard drive won't fit my camera.
I do carry an iPad Mini when I travel but am not sure it has enough capacity for backing up my photos.

Thanks, Storkington,
I was excited to read about this in the link you provided. Clicking on the link in the article, though, took me to Amazon where it's quite a bit more expensive than shown in the article, and the reviews were pretty underwhelming. Even the more techie types were having trouble using it. Maybe the next generation of this device will have those issues sorted out. *sigh* It sounded so promising...

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, so Mods feel free to put it in the correct one.
How do you back up your photos when you're traveling in another country, without a laptop, smart phone, or internet access? I've read of people swapping out various memory cards every couple of days in case the camera is stolen. But isn't there some sort of compact device that I can somehow dump the day's photos into each night, and then load all the photos from it to my computer when I get home? And how does it work? Does it connect to the camera, or you insert the memory card into it?
Oh, and could such a device handle RAW file storage (thank you RAW forum members for setting me on that path!).
Totally not a techie--please speak slowly and use simple words.
Thanks for any info.

I have switched to shooting Raw, but am having an awful lot of fun playing with some of my favorite old jpgs.
As an aside, is there a standard or preferred way, at least on this forum, to write Raw and jpg? I've seen the terms Capitalized, all CAPS, all lower case, spelled "jpg," and "jpeg." How do the cool kids do it?

Well, Raw processing is making me like digital photography a whole lot better! It is a lot easier to use than I expected it to be; it's easier to do it than read about it. I feel much more in control of my photography.
I"m getting to like the new, Raw images of some of my old favorite jpgs, the ones that I had really liked before. Raw processing changes them so dramatically it's taken time to appreciate how much better they really are, because I had been so wedded to the old images (often with dark, "mysterious" shadows that aren't so mysterious anymore--there was actually a lot in there!). I wonder if this has happened to some of you who came late to Raw?

Yes, thanks for this article. I love the term "bug botherer," though insects are not my thing (unless they're inside a flower, or trolling some lichen).

Thank you both for the patient replies and excellent resources. It's all given me a good start for experimenting and making mistakes. I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but will try to consolidate them so as not to wear out my welcome.

I've been reading up on shooting and processing with raw and have done a couple of minor edits--I think--on PSE 10. Several questions:
1. How do I know which version of raw I have? Is it called Camera Raw or ACR when it's part of PSE 10? I take it it's an older version and not the v9 people are mentioning here?
2. By "I think," I mean, I opened some regular ol' jpg photos using the File-Open As window in PSE and selecting Camera Raw. Made some tweaks, saw the enormous potential, and realized I want to learn this thing. So if the original photos were jpg, was I actually using the raw processing? Or was PSE just humoring me and the photos reverted back to jpg? I've since read there's a difference between Save and Done. The photos in the PSE folder still have the jpg extension but they open up in the raw window. The thumbnails of those photos in my main photo file have RAW RGB in one corner.
3. My camera is a Canon T2i, if that makes any difference. I just switched the setting to raw but haven't processed the photos yet.
4. I've been going through back issues of PET to understand what raw is and the whys and hows of using it. What I'm getting is that you start with the raw part first, then do any other tweaking with PSE, right?
Many many thanks to the authors of those articles, by the way--they were quite readable and pretty easy to understand, and made a lot of sense.
5. Are there some practice tutorials around here that I can view? I didn't see any for raw, but may not have been looking in the right place.
Thanks for any help you can provide. You should by now realize I'm somewhat technically challenged so speaking slowly and using simple words would be appreciated.

I thought I, too, would miss the print version, as I liked highlighting text and tacking Post-Its on the pages, but then realized I can download the digital versions on my iPad and do the same thing. The cool part is that with my iPad on next to my laptop, I have the notes right there while I work...or play.
The subscription extension I got was very generous! And the magazine is monthly instead of bimonthly! Great customer care!!!

Thanks for the clarification, Storkington. As you now know, my tech knowledge/skills are pretty basic!

MajorMajor, on the first page of this thread a couple of people noted their credit cards had been hacked. I was thinking the hackers got into our PET accounts via EV.

Thanks, Sepiana. (I was especially glad to find that you had migrated over here). I had read that message but wondered what sort of damage was done. It sounds like several people's credit card numbers were stolen from the site; is that correct?
