No, I wasn't aware of those forums. I think I had migrated over to PSE and more after the demise of that other web site. I will have to calm down a bit before trying again.

Thanks, Sepiana, but that didn't work either. I'm the only user of this laptop, so the only admin as well. Grrr.... Not sure I want to bother reinstalling it if it's going to be this buggy.
Perhaps we'll meet again in the Lightroom forum.

Thanks for all the help. I was so hoping that deleting the Preferences file would do the trick, but sadly, it has not. None of the tools mentioned above work. I did see the pop-up for deleting, and did see some changes in the panels, so I know it went through.
After I last posted, I signed up for a beginning Lightroom class on Saturday! (Even though I don't really know what it is--but I'm really fed up with PSE).

The problems started a couple of months ago. I got through a few photographs from a trip, then it started acting up.
I open PSE and it goes directly to the Editor. I drag an image into the window and if it's a RAW image it goes there first. After RAW editing, the image opens in the PSE editing window (8 bits). I create a new layer and crop the image. Then I zoom in to work on a problem area. I select a Tool, adjust the size of the brush and the amount of opacity, Normal mode, do the Alt-Click thing to define the source point if necessary, and drag the brush over the area. And... nothing. Spot Healing shows the gray fuzzy line when I drag, but does not remove anything. I can also see the + from the area I've selected moving around, but it's just not covering up the area.
Alternatively, after giving up, I open the image later from the File tab, Open Recently Edited File. Still nothing.
The Adjustments section works fine.

I'm using PSE 10 on a Windows 10 laptop. I've nearly given up editing my photos because of the frustration involved trying to get various tools to work. Admittedly I'm not very proficient but I've been able to do some tweaking in the past without too much trouble. I can work in RAW just fine, thank goodness, but it's tools for retouching (like removing ticks from an antelope's face, or a stray mark from a scanned ink drawing) that just aren't working.
Specifically, tools such as Healing Brush, Eraser, Clone Stamp, Spot Healing among others do nothing. I've tried several tricks from the forum such as Reset Tools, Reset All Tools, exiting PSE, restarting my computer; once in a while one of those works, but last night, none did. I consulted the Missing Manual as well, to make sure I wasn't missing some step.
Now what? I'm beyond frustrated.

These are both excellent explanations that I actually understood! Thank you both. I don't see losing the RAW edits as an issue. As I get better at this, starting over on some photos is probably a good thing.

I've scoured the archives and the Missing Manual book for an answer. I shoot RAW (Canon T2i) and then tweak the photos in the RAW window that opens when I open the PSE10 Editor. When I'm satisfied with a photo, I save it with a name and stick it in a different folder in order to create an online album to share. It saves automatically with a .psd extension, and I have to convert them to jpg to post them in the album. Occasionally, but not every time, an icon that looks like a blank piece of paper appears in the folder or on my desktop, with the new name and the .xmp extension. Normally, since I have no idea what it's for, I delete them. But is there any reason why I should save them? I don't get into the hardcore stuff.

Thanks for that info. I've started looking at some brands that have that feature.

Greetings, all,
I've always owned laptops, never a desktop. It's time for a new one. The Toshiba I currently own has a screen whose position I have to adjust frequently while viewing and editing photos to see the color correctly. Photos on my iPad always look good, and on a recent trip there were a couple of people editing photos on laptop screens that didn't need adjusting.
My question is: What do I look for, screen-wise, while I shop? What is the descriptive phrase or acronym for a screen that looks good from any angle?
Please don't get too techy on me here. Use simple words when possible. Thanks.

Good points, Alexr. I understand well why you want to keep your photos private. As mentioned, a friend likes to use my travel photos sometimes when he's low on ideas for his blog (blogger's block?), and they are public then. But he only uses my first name.

Thanks for that. If they are doing the conversion automatically that saves me from the hassle.

Now how cool is that! So Flickr can actually accept PSD files?

Thanks for all the tips and recommendations. HMCA, the link to the article was very useful; I hadn't come across that article in my recent search. Flickr seems to be the favorite here, but the WiseGeek article and Dandc may convince me to give Google another try. Sepiana, I'm still on PSE 10, the only version I've ever owned.
I don't do FB or any of that other stuff. I just put together albums, usually from my travels, and send a link to interested family and friends so they can peruse at their leisure. No more inviting people over to endure a slide show! One friend has used a lot of my photos in his own blog when he's got writer's/photographer's block.

I think I need a pep talk, and some advice. After a trip to Ecuador in August, I've been trying to put together an album of the best photos on the stupid Google Photos site, since they no longer support Picasa. I used Picasa for a number of years, found it quite user-friendly, and put a lot of care into creating albums to share with friends (none are public). Now all those albums are on Google, a site I'm finding very difficult and confusing. I gave up after adding just six photos. It's discouraging, and I haven't taken my DSLR and lenses out of the closet in months.
Did I just not give it enough of a try, or is it really that difficult? Is there a different photo sharing site that's more user friendly?

Oh, is that a possibility, to keep the forum active? I could live with that. I believe Julie is referring to this forum here -- Photoshop Elements & More. We are not related in any shape or form to the PET site, i.e., they are not our parent site. We are a new fresh forum.
You may be thinking of the Elements Village forum, which closed down last year. PET was their parent site.
Yes, I was thinking of Elements Village. I thought this forum was its new version. Cool, glad to hear this forum will still be here.
