I'm hooked on the moon and constantly look for ways to get sharper images. Registrax is a free open source image alignment, stacking, & processing package primarily used for astro-photography available for Windows only. The earthโs atmosphere fluctuates and interfereswith images; since the disturbance is random it can easily be negated by stacking images.
My short tutorial is available on Cloudup

Pete, Thanks for the moon link. Can't find the moon photo but super happy that we might see another comet. Will be keeping on top of this. I am interested in photo alignment so will download Registrax. Thanks for the tutorial too. ๐ Your moon example looks good. I have never been pleased with my moon photos. Thanks, Clive

Sorry about the moon pic I copied the wrong link ... try thisWow, that is some high resolution considering the distance!! I am going to download Registrax tonight. Do you know if I have (say) 10 photos in 10 layers, will Registrax align them but leave as layers (i.e. saved as a multi-layer file) so I could then open again in PSE? The images in this GIF were aligned manually one at a time. (I could not figure out how to align them in Elements+). Would be nice to have them aligned better....note how the fence tops move a tiny but. Having said that, I'd like to try stacking several moon photos to see if I can get better photos. I have good glass and cameras and the air is clean here but my moon shots are only so-so. Thanks, Clive

I haven't tried that; what I do know is Registrax will do it's magic to create a new image from the aligned versions; none of the source images are changed (at least the way I process)
You're probably aware of this ... shooting the moon at it's meridian usually produces better images because there's a bit less atmosphere to shoot through. Also letting your camera adjust to the outdoor temperature will help.
Do you know what 50% of Canada is?

Do you know what 50% of Canada is?
What is it? A very bad dad joke >>> A appears 3 times in a 6 letter Canada
So 50% of Canada is the letter A

I've been using afocal photography (through the lens) with my iPhones for quite some time; ever since I upgraded from an 11pro to 13pro I had very poor results. After many trials with out decent results I went Google and discovered that Apple introduced LiDAR (light detection and ranging - similar to radar) to the 13 & 14. This is a huge benefit for night time imaging, however it's awful for afocal. LiDAR is not a controllable with software, however there's a simple, free fix - just physically block it. take a look >>> www.weasner.com/co/articles/iPhone_13_Pro_Max_LiDAR.htmlHere's a shot after using a small piece of tape just covering the LiDAR, a 12 image stack using Registax 6; minor tone adjustments using On1, no noise reduction, dynamic contrast, cropping in On1.
