Hi All,
I am hoping for some advice. I am striclly amatuer, no professional work at all.
I do my own processing and printing. I also make my own frames and mount all of my work. I find it all adds to the satisfaction.
As far as printing is concerned, I am by no means an expert and rely on the agents a lot.
I print using an Epson R3000 A3 Inkjet printer, using Epson Sheet paper and bulk Ultra Chrome Vivid Magenta K3 ink from Vermont in the USA.
I found it cost me about 20% of the cost of buying Epson ink Cartridges, even after Tax and Transport.
Due to exorbitant courier fees from the USA, I have had to have changed my supplier to Marrutt in the UK. This will be a first for me.
Photo paper is a different kettle of fish, the courier costs form a large part of the delivered product price, so it is not worth while importing and I have been using local Epson sheet paper.
I have professional photographer friend who suggested I try using 17" wide 30m 255 gr. photo paper rolls.
I have constructed a paper cutting which also doubles as a curvature removal press. I can produce anything from A2 to A5 paper as required.
This is great, my cost of paper has reduced by 50% and producing any size paper is liberating.
I have always printed on Epson Premium Semi-gloss or Premium Glossy 255gr. paper. Now Epson inform me that Semi Gloss and Glossy are no longer available in 17" only in 34".
This is far to large for me to handle. In the interim they have supplied me with 17" RLP 255gr rolls of Lustre paper. It has no Epson label on it, which worries me . I am not sure whether it is Premium Luster or Super Premium Lustre but my print quality is way down. I am using the Premium Lustre ICC . They tell me that that they can't supply Glossy because it is brittle and will crack on the narrow 17" roll.
Marrutt in the UK have amazing client service and they have offered to do a custom ICC for use with the "Epson" paper and their inks. Unfortunately with our almost non existent postal service, it will take months for my calibration print to get to them.
I wondering if anyone:
knows where I might source 17' Roll Premier Glossy paper directly in South African. I do not like the Lustre results, too "soft" and the whites and blacks lack depth.
whether it will be feasible to use a lighter paper ( 170gr. ) to produce quality display prints ( this would be more flexible )
I would need to be able to source the compatible ICC.
Not the most interesting problem, but I would appreciate any suggestions.
