I was kind of amazed to NOT find an easy way to do vignettes! Some other editing apps make it pretty simple. I had not had a reason to do a vignette until today and was pretty well stumped for awhile. I went to another app, eventually. But, I assume there is some way to do this that isn't too many steps??

A quick basic way to add a vignette is to go into Guided edit and it's one of the Basic Edits (in 2022) - I think they may have changed where it is in 2023 but it's still there in Guided edits. Has a limited number of options but it's quick and easy to use.

THX, I totally missed it! I think I looked everywhere but in the Basic selection! Duh!

Nik Collection has great vignette options, with a better level of control and subtlety than PSE I think.
Also, the edge burn option gives a different approach.
But if you don't already have it, it isn't cheap and probably over the top if you do not use all the other options.

And, once you are done, you can take your file to Expert Edit for further editing. |

I think I looked everywhere but in the Basic selection! , I thought of something. When you were looking in Guided Edit, did you use the Guided Edit Search, a new feature introduced in PSE 2023? There are 61 Guided Edits in this version; this new feature is a lifesaver. Photoshop Elements 2023 introduces Guided Edit Search |

PSE Menu/Filter/Correct Camera Distortion.
Has an easy to use vignette section. The vignette can be either Black or White and you can control the size of it.
Moto is back. He's alive. He survived another hospitalization. Althrough still weak.

If you want a custom controllable vignette, one that emphasizes a certain point in a picture, they are easily created by using the Multiply and Screen layer modes.
Most vignettes draw focus only to the center of the image area; the method I will stumble about describing will draw focus to any chosen point in the picture - or multiple points.
Duplicate your layer (or Stamp Visible your layer stack)
If your image is plenty light, then choose Multiply for your layer mode.
If it could stand to be a bit brighter, then choose Screen.
Select the Gradient tool.
In the options, choose a circular gradient and a White to Clear (or Black to Clear) gradient.
Adjust the feathering of the gradient to suit.
Depending on whether you chose Multiply or Screen, and whether your gradient is White to Clear or Black to Clear, add either a "Hide" or "Reveal" layer mask to your layer.
Place your cursor right on your possum's nose and draw your circular gradient; you can draw as near or far out as you wish; a tight, close, circle will really draw obvious attention to the target; a wide circle will gradually draw the attention.
Depending on your choices above, in Multiply, your possum's face will remain as it already was and everything around it will gradually (or rapidly) darken --- or, if you chose Screen, then everything else will remain as it was and your possum's face will brighten.
If you want brighter or darker, simply duplicate your doctored layer --- need more, duplicate again --- need less = adjust Opacity.
If things turned out backward to what you wanted, either change your layer mask from white to black or vice-versa; or, change your White to Clear gradient to Black to Clear.
This style of vignette will draw focus to any point(s) in the picture instead of just focusing on the center (soccer mom style).
