I love their soft colours and their soft cooing, but I don't like the way they consume more chicken feed than the actual chickens do. I stand guard for 10 minutes or more when I throw out seed, and when the lookout on the roof sees that I've moved on then in they swoop to clear up what's left.

What I notice around here is that they must love salt.
I keep a 50-lb salt block out for Henry and have relocated where it sits a few times. (not the same block; they only last maybe three months; I think Henry gets help from the deer and everything else around here)
Any of the spots where it may have been, it was probably there for a couple years or more, giving the salt run-off plenty of time to soak into the ground.
I have noticed that the Doves congregate around wherever the salt has been (or where it currently is); I am more likely to find them hanging out there than anywhere else.
