Hello everyone from this newbie. Glad to have found a site of like-minded people!
Is printing photos on dark paper even possible? I tried it with a png file and it didn't work.
Any help will be so appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi tiramisu, welcome to PSE&M!
We could use some more information.
Which photo-editing program are you using? Is this a color image? Or is it a b&w image? What do you mean when you say "it didn't work"? What happened? Any error message?

Good morning and thank you Sepiana!
I'm using PSE 11. I save the file as a png and then move it to the sd card which I then place in the printer. The problem is, the printer reads it as an incompatible file and it does not even show up in the printer preview window.
If I try to save it in the paint program as a png....a message comes up saying that all transparency will be lost if I do that.
I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.

Hi tiramisu; welcome to Photoshop Elements and More!
First, the color of the paper is unknown to the printer, so that is not the problem.
I presume that you have successfully printed using this same process (SD card in the printer), yes? Is there a reason why you can not print directly from PSE?
Does the image have to be a PNG? It sounds like the printer may not understand that format; so perhaps try TIF (which I believe also supports transparency).

Which paint program are you using to save your PNG file? This could be where the problem lies. Are you by any chance using Microsoft Paint? If so, this program does not support background transparency.
I would suggest doing the printing from within Elements; skip the "moving it to the sd card" step.

I have no advice to give because I've never printed a png file, but I am very curious:
What is dark paper and what color is it actually? I have printed cards on ivory stock, but have never even seen anything darker than that.

Hello tpgettys, I tried to save it in the default Paint program that comes with windows. For some reason, the printer also does not recognize jpg files saved in Elements so after I'm finished editing, I save it in Paint as a jpg and it works out great. You may be right about the TIF....I called Lexmark and none of their printers support png files, so I will now go with your suggestion and see what happens. Thanks so much!

I must say I have never heard of a printer not being able to print a particular type of graphics file. Is this possible?

Hi again tpgettys! I only do that with jpg photos since they won't print if saved in Elements. Never tried to print a png or tiff before. You are correct about the tif file, it will print....so kudos to you! I thought the colors in the file would block out the background color of the paper....I don't know if I'm explaining myself correctly, but they don't. It prints with a transparent background but the color of the paper makes the image impossible to see. The paper is dark brown.

Ok! It looks like the printer is the culprit indeed. In this case, try a TIFF file as Tom suggested. You could also try a GIF file. Both formats support background transparency.

Unfortunately, with Lexmark at least, it is the case. Although tpgettys & Sepiana were right, it does print TIFF I must say I have never heard of a printer not being able to print a particular type of graphics file. Is this possible?
