This story is a bit convoluted. Until last evening, the skies here in southern Alberta have been crystal clear. But the wind changed overnight a blew in dense smoke from horrific wildfires in central and northern Alberta. Dozens of fires are burning and many are out of control. One named the Grizzly Complex covers 266 square miles, almost 700 square kilometers. The situation in Alberta is dire and we need significant rain but none is currently forecast. It will get much worse before it gets better. The dense smoke is a good opportunity to photograph sunspots without dense filters in the camera lens. It is a small consolation in a bad time for our province. Sunspots today.
This is the view from our summer place on a more normal day last May.

May 15 looking east...an odd cloud in clear skies.

Oh no....so sorry about the fires. We experienced that when we went to the Grand Tetons a number of years ago.
Very interesting cloud.

Very sad to hear about your bushfires, there's no getting away from all that smoke. Hope rain arrives soon to help the situation along. Don't see many cloud formations like that very often, never in fact, I was reminded of the Starship Enterprise for some reason.
