Very interesting read about the Cincinnati and Green River Railway and a very good explanation as to why our area is so entrenched in poverty, and why we are worse off today than we were a hundred years ago.

a very good explanation as to why our area is so entrenched in poverty, and why we are worse off today than we were a hundred years ago. Thanks. A most interesting story reminding us once again how little most of us know about the early years of development and the hardships endured. My grandparents came from Germany in 1913. They cleared scrub forest by hand and with horses to grow a few acres of oats and barley. When I came to Canada in in 1955 (I was born in post-war England), my dad's brothers farmed in the same area and had no electricity. One family never even had a water well and hauled drinking water by pail from a spring creek that ran 365 days a year...even in winter. That was only 1955. Today, the area is most prosperous because of the good soil in most of the area. The soil is not "thin" as noted in your article.
