Pen and Wash Effect
This Creative Effects Challenge will show you how to create a Pen and Wash Color image using Layers in Photoshop Elements or the full version of Photoshop.
Starting Image:

Please read thru the entire tutorial before you start.
Let’s get started:
1. Open an image that you want to use to create this effect.
2. Duplicate the layer twice (Ctrl/CMD+j).
3. On the top layer (Layer 1 copy) go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Stylize>Glowing Edges with the following settings:
a. Low Resolution settings
i. Edge Width : 1
ii. Edge Brightness : 5
iii. Smoothness : 2
b. High Resolution settings
i. Edge Width : 3
ii. Edge Brightness : 10
iii. Smoothness : 4
Feel free to experiment.
4. Click OK.
5. Invert this layer (Ctrl/CMD+i).
6. Desaturate this layer (Ctrl/CMD+Shift+u).
7. Set the Blend mode of this layer to Multiply.
8. Add a Levels adjustment layer and set it to the following.
a. Black Point - 30
b. Gray Point - .73
c. White Point - 218
9. Select Layer 1.
10. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with the following settings:
a. Set the Radius between 8 and 15.
b. Default at 12.5.
c. Click OK.
11. Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to Layer 1.
a. Set the Saturation to plus 40.
12. Add a Levels adjustment layer above the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with the following settings.
a. Black Point - 0
b. Gray Point - 2.08
c. White Point - 196
13. Done.
Final Layer Stack
Please post your start and final images. Experiment and Have Fun!
But there’s more, this tutorial includes an action. The Action includes an Undo that Reverts your image back to its original state.
