I'm very new to creating actions and I'm looking to do something I think is simple, but my internet searches have turned up nothing.
I want an action that does a few things and then opens a filter (in this case On1 Effects). So far so good, but I want it to end there - just open the filter and not apply anything or close it. I can't figure out how to do this, because to stop the recording I have to close Effects, and that gets recorded as a step.

So far it make no sense to me. If you go into On1 Effects as a plugin, what do you do with your image? Doesn't it have to come back to Photoshop to be saved? I would think that all you need to do is add a dialog box on the step going into On1. I don't use on1 so I did what I think you requested with NIK. There are no steps after going to NIK. Am I to assume you are attempting to load these edited image into On1 and not go back to Photoshop? if so I wish you good luck with that.

I'm planning on going back to Photoshop, I just don't want the Action to apply any On1 settings. Just trying to save me a few clicks The action I want is: - duplicate background layer - convert to Smart Object - Open on1 Effects [End of action] I make edits in On1 and save back to Photoshop. What happens now is that it will apply settings within On1 automatically and save those back to Photoshop.
Interestingly, I'm noticing On1 NoNoise doesn't behave this way, and actually does what I want it to do (stay open to let me apply settings)

Huh, that is frustrating, but may point to differences in the On1 modules interface. Perhaps if you bring it to their attention they will respond by making them consistent.

I wonder when it opens in On 1 could it be paused/stopped and then you could change the filters that it automatically applied before returning back to photoshop?

That sounds like an on1 effects issue. I downloaded and tried it with ON1 portrait and it worked.

In the words of Indiana jones - maybe you're digging in the wrong place.
Please look under File Automate for On1 to see if that works.

Please look under File Automate for On1 to see if that works. I gave it a try; I can confirm it. Going the File>Automate way works with ON1 Effects.
