After I create a new layout, I use it as my desktop wallpaper - both to enjoy it and to find the errors, such as misspellings or something out of place. This one, in its original form, bothered me - it looked incomplete. So yesterday, I blended a paper into the background. It's still simplistic, and it doesn't wow me, but I like it a lot better. It is a busy layout and when I use a too busy background, that bothers me, too, so this is a good compromise. To use this paper, I changed it to b/w and then used blend mode "overlay". I tried turning the stripes horizontal, but I like the vertical look better.

First I like how you were able to create a pleasing layout using so many pictures, Janice! And yes, the stripes work well on the background paper.

I prefer your second version with the stripes Janice. They appear to lend a sense of depth or substance to the background. I like the staggered layout of your beautiful images too.

That “cat” just demanded to be included. Who was I to argue.
The picture placement was part (or maybe all) a part of a template. I will often grab only the photo arrays from one template to use on another layout.

That simple change made all the difference. It does look better with that background.

I love your photo placement, leads my eye around the page, plus the added stripes just gives it a pleasing balance. The background colour works so well too.

I was right. The photo array was a template from 2011. I adjusted the photo sizes and shifted some, but used it pretty much as designed. That's why I love templates - you can make any adjustment to suit your design idea - all the while reaping the benefits of someone else's work to inspire you.
