A day visit to Winchester a few years ago happened to coincide with a workforce preparing Winchester Cathedral for roof repairs. The lead roof was in need of complete replacement. The roof had sections of scaffolding lowered over the top so it could be covered for weatherproofing and give room to work underneath. Other work was also needed and together, it cost around four million Pounds. I don't know what proportion of that the roof was. I think the roof dates back to Norman times. Even though made of lead, I believe it has had many patch-ups over the the centuries. They decided no more patches could be put on and so a whole new lead roof was needed. Each of the scaffold sections weighed 5 tonnes and needed lifting to quite a height (tonne is a metric unit, heavier than a ton). One of the largest cranes of its type in Britain was brought in to do the job. I had to look up some of the above and was surprised to see it was done in 2015. The years are shooting by quicker than I can keep up with.  |
