I want to rename about a thousand images, and would prefer to be able to do with within Elements Organiser as a batch process. Obviously there a a number of utilities that I could use outside Elements but that would cause complications.
About a year ago I bought a new camera, intending to sell its predecessor, but now I intent to use both. They are Fujifilm cameras and all the image files start with "DSCF". I have now set each camera to output images with the originating camera name e.e." XT10xxxx.JPG. From now that works fine with new imports to Organiser but I have all the images taken from June last year to rename.
Can I remove the "DSCF" and replace it with "XT10" within Elements? I've taken a look at "Process Multiple Files" but can't fathom how to get it to do what I need!

If you can't wangle it in the Organizer, the free Irfanview is easy to work with.

You're right but it would be betters as I organise with "Organiser" to find a way of getting Elements to do it for me.

I very much doubt that there are many external softwares able to do that (I don't have Irfanview). Let's suppose you have found a software that can do that: the necessary effect will be that all those renamed pictures will be 'disconnected' in your catalog(s). If your renamed files are in a single folder, that's not a big problem: it's easy to use the reconnect feature and browse to the location of that folder. You can always move selected files in a new empty folder for that purpose. It's important to know that you can always select files by the exif data: camera maker or model. You can assign different keywords it that is easier for you.

The Process Multiple Files command (which lets you batch-rename your files) can be accessed from within the Organizer. 1. Select the files you want. 2. Go to File>Export As New File(s). Shortcut – Ctrl-E. 3. In the dialog box, go to Filenames and select Common Base Name. 4. Enter the file name you want. Ex.: X10. Your files will get the new name + a sequential number (X10-1, XT10-2, etc.)
NOTE: If you use the Process Multiple Files command from within the Editor (File>Process Multiple Files), you will have more flexibility in batch-renaming your files. The Rename Files menu offers a wide choice of file names -- three different capitalization styles, serial letters, serial numbers, dates, etc.
Here is some more information on batch-processing in Elements.

Well, Irfanview certainly can, and I'm pretty sure there are quite a few other renaming utilities. I have most probaby misunderstood the renaming scheme. Lets say you have a file named DSCF1234.jpg to rename to XT101234.jpg that is, keeping the substring '1234'. I don't see a way in Irfanview nor in my Faststone. If you want simply to rename files with the starting string XT10 plus an order number, that's easy. There are three batch renaming features in Elements. - the simplest one is the 'export' function of the organizer which can rename to a starting string plus order number - The 'process multiple files' in the editor. Better option, especially for combining original filename, date template and order number. - The advanced downloader options, generally totally ignored, but the most powerful of all. You can even rename based on exif data. Unfortunately, the camera model is not an option among the 19 exif fields...

I just tried a test, changing DSC to X10. Worked fine, kept all the rest of the file name.
