Creative Effects Challenge No. 212 - Modified Hayes Island Effect

This Creative Effects Challenge will show you how to create a Modified Hayes Island Effect image using Layers in Photoshop Elements or the full version of Photoshop.

Please read thru the entire tutorial before you start.
Let’s get started:
1. Open an image that you want to use to create this effect.
2. Duplicate the layer three times (Ctrl/CMD+j).
3. Rename the top duplicated layer to Outline.
4. Rename the middle duplicated layer to Dry Brush.
5. Rename the bottom duplicated layer to Blur.
6. Select the top layer (Outline). Go to Filter>Stylize>Find Edges.
7. Desaturate this layer (Ctrl/CMD+Shift+u).
8. Set the blend mode of this layer to Soft Light.
9. Select the middle layer (Dry Brush). Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Dry Brush.
a. Set the Brush Size to 4.
b. Brush Detail to 9.
c. Texture to 1.
d. Click OK.
10. Set the blend mode of this layer to Soft Light.
11. Select the Blur layer.
12. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with the following settings:
a. Set the Radius between 5 and 10.
b. Default at 7.5.
c. Click OK.
13. With the Blur layer selected, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
a. Set the saturation to plus 45 – or adjust as needed.
14. Select the Dry Brush layer and add a blank layer above it.
15. Go to Edit>Fill Layer (Edit>Fill in PS) and select 50% Gray.
16. Click OK.
17. Rename this layer to Texture.
a. Select the Texture layer. Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Texture>Texturizer.
b. Set Texture to Sandstone.
c. Scaling to 200%.
d. Relief to 4.
e. Click OK.
18. Set the Blend mode of the Texture Layer to Soft Light.
19. Press d on your keyboard to set your default colors to Black and White.
20. Add a new layer at the top of the layer stack.
21. Fill the layer with White (Ctrl+Backspace or CMD+Delete)
22. Hold down the Alt/Option key while adding a Layer mask. The Layer mask should be black – if it is white, select it and press Ctrl/CMD+I to invert it.
23. You can now paint with White on the Top Black Layer Mask to give it a white border as needed.
24. You can turn off the eye on the Texture layer if you do not want the Texture or you can adjust the opacity.
25. Done.

But there’s more, this tutorial includes an action. The Action includes a Washed-out version and an Undo that Reverts your image back to its original state.
