Trying to get the hang of using clipping masks Looks great Jim . Clipping masks and layer masks are among my favourite techniques and can be used in a variety of ways. I don’t know if you have investigated the Digital Scrapbooking Index in the Digital Scrapbooking Board but I provided some information and examples of working with clipping masks and layers masks and this can be found at the link below. I don’t claim to be an expert this is just some of what I’ve learned along the way. If it’s of help - great - if not, no problem. photoshopelementsandmore.com/thread/9435/working-masks

Thanks for your link, Lillias. Good info. You obviously are very experienced at this. I've been looking around and realize that Scrap-booking is a whole different world. I can't believe how much is involved and going on in that arena. Wow! I have a couple of beginner's questions if you don't mind?
In your example of the yellow rose and bird image I'm wondering why, when almost finished, you duplicated the background layer, dragged it to the top and lightened the blend mode. To lighten the area around the bird?
Also, in your lady with white flowers image at what position in your layer stack do you place the "kit" overlay and does that kit automatically make the white photo frame appear to be behind her head with the flowers in front of her also or
did you have to do more adjustments or masking? Without seeing your layer stack that includes your kit I'm having trouble grasping how it got placed. Thanks.

I have a couple of beginner's questions if you don't mind? I don't mind at all Jim . Re the yellow rose and bird image. Quite a while ago now I watched some YouTube videos by Jai Johnson a well known artist/photographer and she does digital stuff too. One of the techniques she used was to duplicate the background layer, put it at the top of the layers stack and give it a blend mode. In this case I used the Soft Light blend mode. It’s amazing actually the difference this can make to a piece. In this case I feel it gives a vibrancy to the finished work sort of bringing it to life. I hope that makes sense. Re the girl with the white flowers...If you look at my layers panel here you will see I started with a background layer on top of which I placed the clipping mask. Above that I placed the image and clipped it to the mask. The photo frame was part of the kit. I wanted it to appear as if she was popping out from the frame so to do that non-destructively I added a layer mask to the photo frame layer. I was then able to use a brush with black as the colour to brush away the part of the frame to give the desired effect. The two layers above that contain the floral elements from the kit I used.
Hope this helps...
You also mentioned “at what position in your layer stack do you place the "kit" overlay” Can I just add - If i have understood you correctly - a ‘kit’ isn’t an overlay. A ‘kit’ is usually made up of a selection of background papers, a variety of elements such as flowers, objects, masks, frames, word art etc; All individual items which you have to decide how to use or place on your page.

I don't mind at all Jim . Thank you for explaining, Lillias. As you can see, I know very little about this stuff. I am a little familiar with Jai Johnson's webinars and have purchased one of her texture sets. I'll spend more time later mulling over all of your info. Thanks again.

Thank you, Lillias. I'll definitely keep your offer in mind. I doubt that I'll venture very far into the Scrapbook world but I do like many of the ideas I've noticed in various examples of that genre. I really lean towards a less cluttered look than many of them have but that's just my own personal preference of course.
