Seeking your help ... I want to create an eerie glow behind these dead aspen tree trunks. The second image was painted by a cousin and I'd like to emulate this with my photo. Make sense? Your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!Clive This is small copy of the original converted to B&W. (I have the original full-sized color photo.)  Candace's painting  I made this glow in PSE and was trying place the feathered yellow oval (as a free standing layer vs on a white background) behind the B&W photo and somehow create a faint yellow glow behind the trees. I am unable to do this.  |

Hi Clive, this is an intriguing problem, and Candace's painting is really nice. To be clear, when you said "as a free standing layer vs on a white background", are you meaning yellow on transparent vs. the yellow on white that you made?
I'm wondering if posting this in the Member-to-Member board wouldn't help to get others to play with your idea?

are you meaning yellow on transparent vs. the yellow on white that you made? Yes, I have the glow in a separate layer in a PSD file. I'll move the post later today. |

Is this what you are attempting to do?  Layer Stack  Created the gradient Mask the trees added bevel and shadow Duplicated, flipped and moved Merged Added poster edges, Noise and desaturated. |

Is this what you are attempting to do? Thank you Frank! That's close. I want a dark/black background. Trying get the sense or a dark, eerie night with a glowing aura in the back. Later..I have to get some work done now. Thanks Clive |

That was a good clue for me Frank! Thanks. I've made mask and manually erasing the blacks in a dupe layer of three trees. I'll report back tomorrow. |

Well it appears you're getting close to your desired outcome, Clive. You did a good job bringing back the growth on the bottom of the image. Not sure if this is a good suggestion or not but wondering if it might be good to tone down the aspens a bit? Thinking it might make for a better blend. |

Clive....to clarify, are you trying to achieve the abstract look your cousin had, or are you going for a realistic look? There is a difference as your aspens need an impressionist, tall thinner cast to them to achieve an abstract effect. If a realistic look, I like the first try better than the second, but would suggest that if a subject is backlit, some of the backlit glow would show on it?
As Tom said, this is a very intriguing problem.

The problem is that the mask is already made to fit the existing tree shapes. I probably am doing the masking wrong but it is quite time consuming. I can replace the glow easy-peasy with any shape or colour without affecting the tree mask. I am quite busy and don't want to re-do the mask .. perhaps when it gets cold and I can 't go out as much as now. Thought?! Perhaps I can stretch all features of the project. Hummmm ... will try. I like this much better! You might want to fine tune the branches on the left (or not).
It's crazy how much snow we don't have! Our temps seem to stay around -2 at night to +6 in the day. There is a skiff of snow, making hiking icy, but in town it is mostly gone.
What are you up to that is keeping you so busy?
