Hi All,
I have just taken a series of scenic views of Cape Town.
Being in South Africa, this time of the year we have very bright ambient light.
Cape Town also has mountains, sea and blue sky.
The photos were taken in the evening from an elevated position across a valley, with bright sky above the mountain in shadow. No city lights yet. I suppose that "Dusk" describes it best.
All the foreground in deep shadow cast by the mountain
I just had my camera, with an 18/300mm f5.6 Nikon Zoom, strung round my neck. I was standing on a "cliff edge", so there was no support for my camera.
I had to resort to completely hand held, at 83 that is not easy. I could not reduce my shutter speed to get exposure. I pushed my aperture to the max 5,6 and I did not want to blow the sky.
The result was better than I expected
I will have to have to lighten up o the slopes of the mountain which are in full shadow, almost in complete silhouette, the sky beyond is very bright.
I have never used luminosity masks because I always get left behind in the tutorials. Don't understand, don't use!!
Way back in the early 2010s, I bought the basic Tony Kuiper Luminosity "actions", but have never used them, because I also did not understand the 7 page explanation.
The TK actions were released in about 2006. They also required the use of Channels, which are not available in Elements
I now want to use luminosity masks to lighten up the mountain without producing magnificent halos on the skyline.
Could you possibly give me a link to a tutorial on the subject? Possibly a source of more up to date "actions".
Nikon D500 Nikor 18/300 5,6mm zoom, Windows 11, Elements 2023.
Thanks
