The Polecat Thursday_29-February-2024I was finishing up from feeding Henry at 05:19:PM.
A huge big old much-too-friendly black cat had been hanging around within falling over distance the entire time.
I had just closed the barn-lot gate and turned to open the driveway gates when that black cat darted past my legs and went under the closed gates; and then, just out of the corner of my eye, I saw a second cat, right under the gate chains, and within a foot of my boots.
The black cat was within two feet of this new cat and then it became evident to me that this new cat was an entirely different kind of cat --- a Polecat... oh goodness mercy ...
I eased out of there and went to get the camera.
I noticed that he/she never even threatened to spray me nor that stupid cat that was right there beside him and my first thought was rabies; but then, I noticed that he was limping badly, as if it pained him immensely to walk.
He came on up the driveway past the woodpile, went under the big Cedars, crossed under the fence into Henry's lot, and I lost sight of him.
Maybe whatever had crippled him up had also caused it to be too painful to get into spraying position.
I just wish that I could have gotten a photo of the skunk and black cat together; however, by the time I returned with the camera, they were keeping their distance.
As a side note: I swear that, while I was getting these ready to post, I could smell skunk so strong as to wipe it off my lips...

Well, now you've done it; for the next two weeks I will be trying to remember which cartoon or TV show made that line famous concerning a skunk; I am wanting to think it was Barney Fife.
