A varied collection of rare old photos. Hope the link works! Especially interesting to me was the photo of people trying to stop Katherine Switzer from finishing the Boston Marathon....in 1967! Our daughter ran the New York Marathon in 1990. And as I'm caught up in the March Madness BB games both mens and women......it is interesting to me that women weren't added to the tournaments until 1982 and they couldn't use the term March Madness until 2022..

Looking through the photos, I was surprised to see one of The Beatles performing for only 18 people. This is something I knew about. The venue wasn't the Aldershot Club as said (not even sure there was anywhere called that). It was the Palais Dance Hall. As I heard it, the date was poorly advertised, even to the point where the organizers went to the pub across the road to try and pull in a few more people. Aldershot is the town where I was raised and spent much of my working life. The Palais eventually became derelict and was taken over and renovated by Radio Rentals, the leading TV rental company in the country. It was to become the local workshop and showroom for the area. I was a TV engineer apprentice for Radio Rentals at that time and so my workshop was the adapted Palais. When we first went into the building, we found all sorts of posters for performers such as Joe Brown and the Bruvers, Marty Wilde and others. If only I had picked them up and kept them! Unfortunately they all got dumped at the time of the renovation. Anyway, I trod the same ground as The Beatles and other stars during my days of TV engineering there. I think it was the early 80s when the building burnt down due to an electrical fault. So ended the Palais where The Beatles once performed. The whole story

Just WOW, mart44. What a great personal story you added to this thread. I will be sure to share it with my friend who sent me the link to the pictures.

A varied collection of rare old photos. Hope the link works! Oh, WOW. Brings back some memories. I recall seeing post-WWII bombed out buildings in London when I was very young. mart44 ... great story. Please tell me if I am dreaming. In the 50s there was a HUGE outdoor swimming pool in Aldershot, right? I remember going there. EDIT: I was not dreaming!!

Yes, the swimming pool is still there. Once advertised as the finest in the south. Not sure if that still holds true but it is quite a large one in the actual pool size and surrounding grounds. The fountain in the middle is original and has been there for as long as I can remember. The management called it 'The Cascade' because of its shape and the way the water flowed from the top all over it. People weren't supposed to climb up it for safety reasons but as kids, we always did. I can hear the tanoy blaring out now, "Keep off the cascade!!" We'd all jump off it and back into the pool ..at least for the next 15 minutes.
