Let’s get started:
1. Open an image that you want to use to create this effect.
2. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j).
3. Rename this layer Subject.
4. Select the background layer and add a new blank layer above it.
5. Press d on your keyboard to set your Foreground and Background colors to their default.
6. Make sure that Black is your Foreground color and fill this blank layer with Black (Alt+Backspace Windows or Option+delete Mac).
7. Add a new blank layer above this layer and rename it Scribble.
8. Select the Subject layer and go to Select > Subject on the top menu.
9. This should select your subject. If any parts of your subject are not selected, use the selection brush to add to or subtract from your selection.
10. When you are happy with your selection and the selection is active, add a layer mask. The background should now be removed.
11. Create a clipping mask between the Subject and the Scribble layer.
12. Your layers should look like this with the downward arrow. If you did this correct, your screen should now be black.
13. Load the Brush that you have decided to use.
14. Now select and dab on the Scribble layer by left clicking once – do not click and drag.
15. Repeat your dabbing to have the image show. You can adjust your brush size with the Left [ and Right ] bracket keys.
16. Done.
Final Layer Stack
You can add additional layers to bring back some detail and/or change the color. Copying the Subject layer mask to the Scribble layer may be of some help.
Please post your start and final images. Experiment and Have Fun!
