Our RAW challenge is going to present us with a number of issues to consider when editing this image. High ISO was needed because of the stage lighting and the need to freeze the action. There is the resulting noise as well as white balance issues to be dealt with. Perspective may need correcting. Finally consider where to crop to focus on the action on stage. 1. Participants in the challenge may provide a screenshot of their edits within the RAW converter of their choice along with the reasons for their edits. 2.Following their initial edits members may use whatever “tools" they wish to create an image that portrays their artistic vision for the image as long as the character of the original image is not lost. You may not add anything to the image that wasn’t already there. 3. Including information on plug-ins, actions, external editors, textures etc that were used will only help to inform members of some of the creative options that are available to today’s photographer. 4. Including layer stacks may be something to consider when presenting a final edit. 5. You may not add any objects that were not in the original image. 6. Submissions for this challenge end on Thursday, June 20th.7. At the end of the challenge the photographer will choose three favorite edits. Here is a screenshot of the image we will be working on: Download Link for RAW image.

Thanks for getting this challenging challenge started and adding your panels, Frank. I like your idea of adding walls to the top.

I worked on this as well, today. Started in DXO 4 for the RAW edit In LR I used the vertical adjustment to correct alignment. After that I went to NIK CE 6. Removed color cast using the magenta slider. Used Define with manual placements to remove noise that remained after DXO Cloned and "painted" the walls in PS Went back to CE 6 used: the Silver Reflector effect at 46% Dynamic Contrast on man's face and woman's hair White Neutralizer Back in PS I added a touch of High Pass sharpening Cropped to focus on the actors

I used my image above to create and frame a "painting" for the actor's lounge using Topaz Impression .

It looks like a brawl or fight in the kitchen Interesting take on this image, Karen.....and I think you may be right about the "brawl".

I'm the guilty one and selected this image. I take a lot of pics for the local community theatre and this was one taken during the dress rehearsal of a Canadian comedy called Stag and Doe. The biggest challenge I find is the stage lighting - the theatre uses variable colour LED lights and although to the eye they look fine my camera on auto White Balance often doesn't see the same thing hence the need to shoot raw and adjust in processing. Also the stage lighting usually requires a high ISO so noise can be an issue (this one was shot at ISO 6400 1/200s, f5.6). I find with the actors that they like pictures which emphasise their facial expressions and the action - and this one certainly has action (a brawl in the kitchen of a community hall with a surprised waiter looking on). Everyone did a good job of fixing the white balance although I did have the advantage of knowing the walls were a creamy colour and the LED lighting has a lot of blue in it that the camera sees but the eyes don't. Also everyone straightened the image (I shot this one from a position below the stage and it looks better as though it had been shot straight on) As for the action my preference would be for a tighter crop and also a bit more focus on the waiter looking surprised in the doorway. I also liked the idea of Karen to use a sketch effect so had to try a cartoon action from Panos (which made the waiter look even more surprised. Here are my two attempts:

Thanks for sharing your image with us, Tony. I'm sorry there wasn't more active participation but even if members didn't participate your picture generated a lot of interest looking at the number of views for the challenge.
You gave us a lot to think about. I would probably be stressed doing this on a regular basis! It looks like you have a good handle on achieving the proper white balance, which I found to be particularly difficult. Using a cartoon effect seems perfect for the scene.

Our next RAW challenge will be August 17th. Please consider submitting one of your RAW files for this challenge, When looking for an image you will not be looking for an image that is representative of your best work; but instead one where you might have had exposure issues, cropping/sharpening concerns etc. If you have narrowed it down to a few images PM me and we'll work together on deciding which one might work best for the challenge.
You can contact me via PM. Look forward to hearing from you.
