The Butterfly brush is one of the Special Effects brushes. These brushes are designed to automatically vary the color of the brush stroke in order to produce a more realistic effect. This means that the Butterfly brush will NOT paint with the Foreground color you select; it will paint using its complementary colors.
Don’t despair! There is a way to tame this brush, to trick it into painting using one color.
1. Set your Foreground color to Black (or White, if applicable to your project.)
2. Create a new blank layer.
3. Apply the Butterfly brush on this layer.
4. Ctrl-/Cmd-click on the layer thumbnail to load the brush strokes as a selection.
5. Fill the selection with the color of your choice.
