Hi Just to let UK people know that Amazon have just reduced the price of PSE v13 yet again (presumably in anticipation of v14 being released soon?) So, today, it is only £34.99 (it was £64.99 last evening!) Now, a question, or two ... I have PSE 11 and 12 and was thinking I would skip v13 and maybe go for v14. However, I'm not so sure that v14 is worth the price it is likely to be so am thinking, as v13 is currently reduced, I might buy v13 and then consider v15 when the time comes, especially as I gather the 'odd' numbers versions tend to have a bit more offered than the 'even' numbers. If I were to buy v13 at this reduced price but, when v14 becomes available, I would like v14, is it likely that I would be granted an update to v14 or is it likely that I wouldn't be eligable on the basis of the reduced price I bought it at? Or, what other criteria may I, or may I not, meet to be ellibable for an upgrade? What do you people know about this type of situation? Alternatively, what is the opinion regarding v12 against v13? From what I've heard over the past year, I wonder if this could be a good time to get v13 anyway? I'd be very interested to hear opinions Thanks

Adobe has provisions in place for those who purchase the current version of Elements within about 30 days of the release of the new version. It is called Complimentary Upgrade.
Do I qualify for a free upgrade
As to Elements 12 vs 13 -- Adobe had done a major overhaul of Elements with version 11. So, as it was expected, there weren't too many changes in Elements 12 and Elements 13. You can see if Elements 13 meets your needs and interests by downloading a free trial (which will be available until the new version is released).
In a nutshell, this is what is new in Elements 13.
Content-Aware Fill -- brought over from Photoshop. Updated Crop tool -- it now includes suggestions for possible crops. Refine Selection Brush tool -- for those difficult selections. Photomerge Compose -- it guides you through the process of moving objects or people from one image to another. New effects and frames in Quick Fix. Three new Guided Edit effects. Elements Live -- a section with very helpful tutorials as well as inspiration for your photographic endeavors. New slideshow features -- much easier to use. New e-mail features -- you can now use any e-mail program and there is no more need for verification codes from Adobe Mail. Facebook Cover Photo - a new project in the Create section with themes for this photo. You can also upload these photos directly to Facebook. The Organizer has gone through some updates and it also offers a new way to view your images (Adaptive Grid).

Thank you, Sepiana, for your reply and the links. I couldn't find anything about there being a +/- 30 day period regarding a Complementary Upgrade, only 30 days in relation to checking out a trial.
I'm considering getting PSE 13, if it's only £34.99. I think it may be that price for a short while yet as it was only discounted today. I'm sure it was last night when I checked it!
Anyway, thanks for your list. The links are very useful

This is what Adobe says about complimentary upgrade. (First link in my previous post.)
Unless Adobe has changed its policy since the release of Elements 13, you will qualify for a complimentary upgrade if you purchase your software within 30 days of the release of the new version.
EDIT: I found this information on the Adobe blog. It confirms the 30-day limitation.

For me, on Windows, the big new feature in Elements 13 and the only reason I upgraded, was 64 bit. This was implemented on Macs with version 12 but on Windows only with version 13.

Thanks again, Sepiana I'm sorry, but I'm feeling really dense and still can't see the 30-day bit. However, it's acaedemic now as I found this: and it's Amazon that has the discounted price, of course! I thought it was a bit "Too good to be true" if it were possible to buy v13 at £34.99 and then get a free upgrade to v14 when it was released! Oh well, it's all fun getting these ideas and checking them out. Occassionally, it works out at a good idea At £34.99, I think I will get v13 anyway. I could upgrade to v14 later, if I chose to do so. Allan For me, on Windows, the big new feature in Elements 13 and the only reason I upgraded, was 64 bit. This was implemented on Macs with version 12 but on Windows only with version 13. It's interesting you saying this. What difference did you notice when you used v13, being 64-bit? Presumably there is a difference in performance, or something? Apart from different features, I hadn't considered the benefits of 64-bit so would love to hear from those that have this. Many thanks to you both Julie

Amazon Marketplace is different from the plain vanilla Amazon, which is what is offering that price.

I'm sorry, but I'm feeling really dense and still can't see the 30-day bit. Julie,
In the first link I posted (Adobe Help file), it just says "around the time" as the time frame which makes you eligible for a complimentary upgrade. I mentioned "within about 30 days" because that's the time frame which Adobe has always followed. It is mentioned in the Adobe forums. It is also the time frame mentioned by Jeffrey Tranberry on the Adobe blog I gave the link to -- "The free upgrade window is within the last 30 days".
If you are still concerned about this issue, why not get the answer straight from the horse's mouth? Adobe employees participate in these two forums. They will be able to clear any doubts you may have about this complimentary upgrade.

OK, thanks Sepiana, and thanks MM, for your comments
Even if the v13 is eligible re Amazon Marketplace, it's still going to be ineligible re more than 25% reduced from the retail price. Still, nothing lost by posting on the Adobe site, just to get clarification.
Many thanks Julie

What difference did you notice when you used v13, being 64-bit? Presumably there is a difference in performance, or something? Apart from different features, I hadn't considered the benefits of 64-bit so would love to hear from those that have this. Earlier versions of Elements are 32-bit applications. Even when installed on a 64-bit OS, Elements would install itself as a 32-bit app. This means that the maximum RAM available to Elements 32-bit was 4 GB (3.2 GB to be more precise). It made no difference if you had additional RAM installed on your computer (8 GB, 16 GB, etc.). On the other hand, the 64-bit version of Elements will be able to take advantage of more RAM. The more RAM Elements can use the better. It will help with those features and/or tools which are memory-intensive. In short, it will enhance this program's performance.
Here are screen shots of the memory usage for Elements 12 and Elements 13 installed on a computer running Windows 7 64-bit and with 16 GB RAM. You can see how much more RAM is available to Elements 13, a 64-bit app. NOTE: By default, Elements uses 70% of the available RAM.

Yes, that alone would make a big difference. I do notice sometimes that I have to wait for Elements to 'process' all that it is doing. I'm going to get v13. I've decided! At the price it is just now, at Amazon, it's about 1/2 the 'normal' price, so a good time to buy it. Thanks very much. You've all helped me make up my mind or, at least, helped me justify the purchase Julie

Thanks for the heads up on that Julie. I'm also going for it! (I have version 9)
Just one thing confusing me, under Edition there is a choice of Standard (£34.99) or Upgrade (£66.43) What is that all about?

If you select "Upgrade" on this PAGE and then scroll down to the Customers Questions and Answers section, you will find this explanation.
"Standard" seems to be the equivalent of "Full" (the term used by Adobe). Adobe does not release two versions of Elements, one full and one upgrade version. There is only one version. The "Full" and the "Upgrade" terms refer to price differences. There are no technical differences as far as the program itself is concerned; it is the same version for both prices quoted. The difference in price is determined by your status -- no previous ownership vs. previous ownership of Elements. This is how Adobe rewards customers' loyalty.

Sepiana,
So why is the 'Upgrade' nearly double the price? That's not rewarding!

Sepiana, So why is the 'Upgrade' nearly double the price? That's not rewarding! Bayla I have no idea. This seems to be Amazon's doing, not Adobe's. Why don't you contact Amazon? They should be able to explain it all.
EDIT: BTW, I have several versions of Elements. I paid "Full" price only for the first version I purchased -- Elements 4. Since then I have paid only "Upgrade" prices for all the other versions I purchased. So, it looks like Adobe has rewarded me for my loyalty to their product as I got a discount in price.
